View Full Version : You know how our brakes make that...

You know how the 7th gen Celica brakes make that popping noise when going in reverse and then will usually do it again once or twice when going forward again. Usually this will go away after you hit the brakes going forward one time, but now my brakes make this popping sound all the freaking time. I mean I can be going 70mph down the interstate and barely touch my brake pedal and "pop" their goes the brakes making that noise. The sad thing is now it does this every single time I hit the brakes, not just from reversing and then driving forward like it used to. Does anybdoy have any freaking clue what the deal is? Sorry if I am repeating myself and being incoherent. I haven't slept in like 60 hours straight because of finals. Joy, finals are fun!

I don't think I've ever heard the sound you're talking about. No popping sound at least. The only sound I've heard is like say if I braked on a hill, and at the very end when it settles and goes backwards a little bit, I hear a slight noise.

Not mine.

The only popping noise my car ever made turned out to be a loose wheel.

If you don't have a loose wheel as Scott suggested, it then sounds to me like your pads may be hanging up on the slider rods and then snaping back into place. Try taking out the two rods thru the pads and calipers, put a very light coat of white lithium grease or wheel bearing grease on them (Check them for wear at the same time) and reinstall. See if that stops the noise.

Edit: I see you have a GT. In that case the rear shoes may also be hanging up on the backing plates. Pull the rear drums off, and look for the small raised bumps on the backing plates that the edge of the shoes ride on. They should be easy to spot as shiny spots under the edge of the shoes. put a small amount of the same white grease or wheel bearing grease on those shiny spots with a thin stick while gently prying the shoe away from the backing plate with a large screwdriver. Put it back together and tell us what happens. Check for any leaking fluids while you're in there as well.

Good advice there.

Could the noise be coming from wearing indicators on the pads?

I don't think the noise if from the wear indicator pads, that is more like a squeal of sorts. What I am talking about is a loud pop that happens everytime I hit the brakes. I can just ever so slightly hit the brake pedal and a loud pop comes from the front end. It used to only do it in the mornings when reversing out the driveway and then go away but now it seems to do it all of the time. I thought I read something about this awhile back and that if you take it in for warranty and whatnot that Toyota has to put some kind grease, like mentioned above on the pads or whatnot to correct the problem. However, it will happen again and again. It seems to me like I read it is normally associated with the pads shifting somewhat in their housings, so to speak, when changing the direction of travel front forward to reverse. Does anybody know what I am talking about?

I guess I will get Toyota to look at it when I take it in for warranty work as soon as I get out for the semester. I am already taking it in for sunroof problems, no power to my courtesy light(not fuses or bulb), CV joint popping, and it even sounds like I now have a rod knocking. Man this is crazy it seems like everything happens at one. Anyways I am going to do as pitcrew mentioned, but if anyone else has any ideas as to what it could be then please let me know. I don't think it is anything bad but it is annoying as hell.

Let us know what the dealer says. The same popping noise happens to my brakes first thing in the morning.

Get used to it because it seems to only get worse.

Found it read the post by Rave669 in this thread: http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118873&highlight=disc+rear+drum+brake
Not sure if that is true or not but give it a try, but try it at your own risk.

Yeah that is one thread about the brake problems but my brakes do not squeal now any more than they do normally because of the rusty rotor factor but now they make a popping sound everytime I hit the brakes. I dunno what the deal is I guess itcould be the pads. How often are you guys replacing pads? Mine have like 31,000 miles on them which for me is a really short life. Anyways I guess I will give it a try I already have new rotos anyways. However, I think I will take it to the dealer to see what they say before I put new brakes on it.

I replaced my pads at 70k and they still had life left. I still have not resufaced my rotors as they are fine also at 139,000 miles.

Anyone figure this out for sure yet? It is not the drums and it is not caused from the rusty rotors. I checked that all this afternoon.
