reason y im asking is cuz i think they might charge me a grip just for some coolant so i'll rather go buy something thats equivalent for cheaper.

It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when you are talking about something as important as engine coolant.

The wrong kind of coolant can be corrosive. If you can't get the Toyota coolant use a %50 solution of ethylene glycol. Don't use anything alcohol based.

Ethylene glycol IS alcohol based
Your owners manual will specify the proper coolant.

This is what the owners manual specifies

shops use a machine. go to firestone, though. it's much, much cheaper, and the one i work at now carries the long-life stuff, so i'm assuming other stores do too.

Seeing as though you live in SoCal. I would do 1 bottle of redline watter wetter and the Rest Distilled water. I live in Florida and it works great for me. It dropped temps about 15 degrees across the board.

Sorry, but when I meant flush, I meant to just drain all of the coolant currently in your car, and then put the new stuff in.
To COMPLETELY flush the system of old coolant, then yeah, you would need to use a special machine for that.
But simply draining it is as easy as an oil change.

yea, would the red-line stuff be better if mixed correctly?

All the different color is is what temp it freezes at. I was horrified when I put green coolant in my fully rebuilt 2zz but the thing is, if you mix it right, it does the same as the Toyota Long Life coolant. Don't worry. Where you will have the problems is burping the little *******. It took me an hour with a hand on each radiator hose squeezing the air pockets out. Have fun with that! Just remember, it isnt circulating if your heater blows cold air and an easy way to tell if it is or not is once the fans turn on the thermostat opens and it will start spraying inside ther little coolant bottle. Make sure to put it on the hood latch too or it wont drain.
