There are several different cables, I liked this on best since it's usb. it has a usb-serial conversion cable built in

I've the car-hacker usb-usb cable. It rocks because I don't have serial port on my Dell laptop.

The fat connection part seems to have some circuitry in it, and it is fully epoxied to prevent reverse engineering.

Yea, mine looks just like a usb to serial cable, if anything is different i can't tell. Try radio shack if it doesn't work just return it.

Will not work. Like Matt at MWR said... it has a circiut in it and will not communicate. Immo tried it before.

yes, tried it.
even messed around with the driver and editing the .ini files.
It locks up the emanage software.

Just buy a cable. there are at least 3 different clone cable that I know of
