Hey guys,
Simple question hopefully. Do the 2k2 GT-S Celica 6Spd come with governor chips? If so, how do you disable or remove them? I've only ran up to about 110mph so far and want to know what she can do. :) Thnx for any info.

7th gen Celica's do not have any factory speed limiting devices on them. The Celica's top speed is 137mph.

137?? The speedo is upto 160 rite?? and some people claiming on driving 140-145...

I think the top speed is 137....but the speedo is inaccurate so it reads higher...not sure though...

I've personally been in my Celi GT at 143. It could be off who knows, but DAMN!!!!!!! It gets a little scary at that speed!

According to the latest Car and Driver (May), the 2002 Celica is "Redline limited" @ 129MPH.

I've hit 125 and lift was just coming on in 5th gear. Of course I've got an '00, which should have a higher top end than the '02, since the rev limiter is at 8300 instead of 6800-7000 or whatever it is on the newer model.

Don't know how much difference that would make since you would have to be falling off a cliff to get it to 8300 in 6th. :)

Maybe I'm confused but wouldn't that be where it would be "redline limited"? The lower the gear ratio, the faster you can go, unless it's actually aerodynamically limited.

The car is aerodynamically limited. The top speed of a GTS is redline in 5th gear. When you shift out of 5th and into 6th the there isn't enough power going to the wheels to continue accelerating because of the drag.

I HAVE A 2K2 AUTO GT AND I CAN ONLY HIT 110, AFTER THAT IT SEEMS TO GET STUCK THERE. SO IM ALSO QUESTIONING THAT GOVERNOR CHIP, WONDERING HOW AND WHERE TO TAKE IT OUT.

There is no governor chip, there is nothing on the car to limit its potential. The reason your auto GT can only hit 110 is because that is all the potential it has. If you want to go faster, you need to do modifications to the engine to make more power.

What are you gonna say to them? Yeah i was going 140 and my engine stopped working, so its all your fault.

ok so if top speed in the celi is redline in fifth...what is the sixth gear for??? cruising?

chameleon
04-14-2002, 07:33 AM
Yes, 6th gear is for cruising. The Celica 6 speed is a double over drive transmition, so really, 5th isn't meant for accelerating in either, but the engine makes enough power for you to do so, although the acceleration is very slow in 5th gear.

VVTL-i-KiCkIn

that's same with 5speed transmissions, u can't hit max with 5th gear in 5speed transmission..

5th gear is for cruising

I read the last either motor trend or car and driver article about the shootout between celica 2k2, tiburon, eclipse, rsx, beetle, and it listed the times of accelerations and one was from 0-120mph, and the celica said 37.2 sec, while the rsx sais 28.something. Is the celica that much slower than the rsx at faster speeds? I thought it was a missprint when i first read it?

VVTL-i-KiCkIn
04-15-2002, 02:16 PM
I think that's bs.. because 1/4mile is usually same as 0-100mph

rsx gets similar time as celica in 1/4mile

I don't think there is almost 10sec difference between rsx and celica in 0-120 which is 20mph more to go..

so is that mean after 1/4mile run rsx will fly away or something??

mine is a 2000 gts max speed 140 on 5th gear @ 8300rpm
if you shift to 6th gear it bogs down since i dont have forced induction or NOS...

The top speed of the Celica is only limited to the amount of horsepower it can make. The Celica is drag limited and the only way to over come drag is to make hp.

I'm not saying that it is true, but with some cars it is possible that at a certain speed the other car will start "flying" away. My friends have a rouch stage 2, & camaro ss, till the top of third they are about even, but as soon as the camaro hits 4th it starts leaving as if the mustang is standing still.

top speed in 5th gear is 150-153 indicated, that is actually 140mph (like if you got hit by a radar going 153, which is the highest, it'd indicate 140 on the radar)

this was tested out both by dynoes and calculations.

so 137 isn't far off.

you could probably get it to pull in 6th, if you had a turbo or something...

Supposedly, the fastest you can go with the stock 6-speed transmission is 178mph. Good luck making enough HP to get there, though. ;)

This is not accurate for every car. When I dynoed my speedo was off 5.3??% at different points along the speedo. The speedo is computer controlled so it is more accurate the n the old cable style.

For the 00 GT-S and I assume all others Toyota lists 129 as the top end for fifth, I believe they are using redline as the measurement.
