Question about titling a car!

Im looking into purchasing a 1985 MR2, its in good shape, and its only 500 dollars. I wanna make it my beater. Heres the problem, as far as the owner knows the car has no title, he bought it from a mechanic shop for 500, and the shop did not have the title either. I had the a CARFAX run (see other post for CARFAX) and the the car is clean, but a title was issued in Jan. 04 for it. If i buy this car will i be able to title it?

Most likely the mechanic did work on this car and the owner can not pay, so they held the car for reasonable amount of time and it became theirs. Proper steps is mechanic is suppose to do a lean on the car, and the owner did not pay they can then legally sell the car and transfer title over to the new owner. However the proper paperwork was not done so title is not issued, so I would not touch this car with a 10' pole. Until the present owner has the proper paperwork don't buy this car.

Don't buy it if you will not get a title, that's just asking for trouble.

not sure about FL, but in this case you would file for an abandoned(sp?) title, usually have to wait 30days while they try and contact the previous owner and after that they issue you a restored title and ur good to go.
