Got a CEL the other day, this is the second time since installing the Ingen CAI almost a year ago. Called the dealer (Toyota of Wallingford, CT) they told me to take it right down.
They just called this afternoon, said it was a misfire... they swapped the #1 and #2 cylinder coils (I actually dont know what those even do... never heard of them before). They said they drove it around and everything seems fine now, when I asked what could have caused the problem he said, and I quote "Well with that intake on there, its possible that you could have sucked up some water".
Now, I am pretty sure that isnt the issue. The last time I drove the car in the rain was last Tues., and the CEL came on Sat. morning when right when I started it. Its just nice that with all the horror stories about dealers blaming stuff on aftermarket parts (even when they are obviously not the problem), mine even suggested that it may have been the problem yet did the work under warantee anyway. Good good service, and they even wash the car after they are through working on it.
Just thought I'd share, apparently not all dealers are big jerks after all.
On a related note, anyone have any idea what could cause really, really rough idle for about a minute after a cold start?

yep, a blown exhaust valve... from the short discription it sounds like my problem... from a cold start you'll get a low and rough idle for a minute or two before it jumps up to the normal cold idle range...
check your plugs, coils, injectors, and stuff like that. if that doesn't help(say if the CEL comes back on later), then check the compression.
i believe there is a problem with the injectors(which is already known for the GTS, check the TSBs) that dont allow them to spray as much as needed at high rpms, which causes you to run really lean near redline. that's pretty much the only thing i can think of since my problem was in one cylinder and not all...
look into that

When you say rough idle, do you mean, The tach jumps from like say 2500 to 3k over and over and then smooths out?
cuz this happens to me occasionally. NOT VERY OFTEN THOUGH. I'm tryin to figure out what that means as well.

It's a problem the the car's ECM(ECU). I had the same problem when i put on my AEM CAI. The CAI doesn't cause the problems, it just makes it easier for the problems to occur. When i took my car in for the CEL and rough idle, they knew what to do immediatly. The mechanic showed me a printed diagnostic check of my engine. I had a misfire in the #2 cylinder on a few seperate occasions. All were at idle or start-up after a few seconds. Toyota replaced the ECM and all 4 fuel injectors UNDER WARRANTY. If i'm not mistaken, the mechanic even showed me a TSB on the parts. They said that the problems associated with the ECM and injectors, were most frequent when it was cool and damp. Like in the mornings. Anyways, good luck and i hope this will help.

BTW, the problem hasn't occured again since the change of the ECM and the injectors. It's been about 7 months.

well, the first time I took it to the dealer with the CEL, they changed the ECU and injectors. This time they did the coils (which carry the spark to the cylinder, I was told). Anyway, they said they experienced the rough idle issue, but when they changed the coils it went away. It didnt do it when I picked up the car yesterday and it had been sitting for a long time, so hopefully they got it. They also told me they drove it around with the computer plugged in, taking readings and said everything looked good.

just wondering, were all these replacements free?

Yep, all work done under warantee :)

is that only possible if you have a CEL? (i.e, if your idle is weird but there's no CEL and other noticeable difference...)
