I took my 2000 GT in for the master cylinder recall to the dealer last week and lo and behold, my center cap on my 17-inch HPDesigns rim was missing when I got it back - front passenger. The guy told me they didn't have to take the wheels off to do the "inspection," but how is that possible? Don't they have to bleed the line to make sure there's no air in the line? His story was they just looked under the hood at it and they didn't have any reason to take the wheel off. Any info from the mechanically minded would be Much appreciated. Dealers suck.

ur prolly screwed. Unless u made a note to the dealer that all the caps were there, they can just say it was like that when they got it.

ha, dude the dealerships are ignoring this recall. My car sat there for 4 hours and before i picked it up I asked the service manager what they did. He said they bled the brake line and thats it, i asked if they checked the seal and he was like "oh, ya its fine" So i looked under the hood as soon as i got home and there isn't a single fingerprint on my brake fluid cap. Its all dusty cuz i've never cleaned my engine bay so its very obvious they lied to me.

I doubt they are doing a good job of the recall either.
I think all they might have done is visually inspect under the master cyclinder to see if it was leaking fluid. The only thing they did was put a little sticker near the door indicating the car had been inspected for the recall.
They wouldn't need to take the wheels off for this.

Just got my recall in the mail today. From what everyone is saying here I may as well inspect the master cylinder myself.

they don't necessarily have to take the wheels off to do the brake flush. there is a little nipple that they attache (for some reason i can't spell that word right now) a hose to which sends the old fluid into a little tank. they put a bottle of new brake fluid upside down in your brake fluid reservior and then turn on the bottle (probably air suctioned).
however, a proper inspection by any dealer that wants to make money would include removing the wheels and checking the brakes for wear, so they could have done that and then lied about it.

actually, unless they noted the missing center cap on the ticket, they should have to replace it, or at least Firestone does. I would assume it's an across-the-board rule.

Well, hearing there's a nipple involved makes perfect sense now! I guess they just sucked on mine for a while.
The Toyota customer service office had called me the week before I went back to ask about my cap so I finally called to share my story with her, but nothing's ever happened. What a bunch of morons.

since the concensus is that they didnt need to touch your wheels for the recall inspection... its very likely the dealer was NOT responsbile for your lost center cap.

last time i took my car in for service they mention the recall and then told me they couldnt do the service or the recall because my car was too low and they couldnt get it on the lift. i said what about 2x4's and they said we threw out the ones we had.
