I normally do not bring my personal problems onto this board but this will be an exception. As some of you may know early Sunday morning there was a great earth-quake in the sea and many tsunami waves have hit many south East Asian countries.
This including Sri Lanka (my native country)....so far the death count in Sri lanka is 24000+ and rising by the minute/hour/day. Me and my family still have not gotten in contact with a few of our fam over there. So I ask of your prays (to whom ever you pray to)...that they maybe safe :(
On a related note.....my moms talk to 1 of her old friend over in SL and was told a freaky story about some of the tsunami waves. My mom told me that just before some of the waves hit, the sea receded back for miles on in from the beaches. It looked like the sea receded back till the horizon from the beach. many people who were on the beach walked into the sea with amazement. then without notice it came back with a mighty power/bang and hit the beaches with waves ranging from 15-50ft waves
:scared: x 1000
as of 1/2/2004 the death count is
47000+ in sri lanka and 150000+ in total :AF: x 1000000

I feel bad for the tragedy that happened this past week. I can't believe they deaths are up to 67k. I pray for everyone over there.
I would like to see those waves though. I can't imagine seeing the sea recede back and come back with 30 foot waves. Must of been a site to see but then again, I wouldn't want to be anywhere close by.

Everytime I think about those waves, I picture the movie "the day after tomorrow" where the waves were as tall as skyscrapers in NY.
My heart goes out to all them. I'll keep your family in my prayers Mike. :(
On a side note, has there ever been an earthquake recorded at 10 on the richter scale, before this one?

My mistake, it wasn't 10, but it was 9.0. Still pretty damn bad. Apprently it's the 5th worst earthquake ever recorded. There has never been a 10. The highest was 9.5 in Chile, 1960.

After some research it is predicted that the death toll will surpass 100,000. The number may double due to the epidemics that are now spreading after the disaster. Absolutely terrible.

It's definitely up there, thats for sure. 100,000 lives claimed is a horrific number. :wtc: To put things in perspective, the WTC attack claimed 3,000+ lives. You can't even compare the two...

Sorry to hear that Mike...I heard the earthquake actually threw the earth off its natural rotation, they said our days might actually be longer now because of the quake...the quake was so powerful that it knocked over a censor in central park! This quake was really felt around the world!

I heard the same thing about the Earth's rotation. I wonder how true that is? And if it is true, is it a permanent change? Scary stuff....

Not permanent, but it will take a long time for the earth to naturally correct itself...

This thing is def. affecting not only people but even animals thousands of miles away. 20+ whales washed up on Australian coast prob. as a result of the quake geologists are saying.
This thing is unreal. You can only hope and pray.

It was on the news the other night. Apparently it only caused a few seconds difference. Tuesday was a few seconds shorter than it should have been. Someone posted a really good site about the whole thing on my forums- check it out it's really pretty interesting and tells you all about what happened, including about the rotation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake
They were also saying last night on a special on TV that they have found no corpses of animals from the shore. Thinking that they had a 6th sense that something was going to happen and moved to higher ground.
The whole thing just amazes me.
