i was going out to race my brother 99gsx for the first time now that my engine was nicely broken in. We line up and i look down and see that the engine temp needle was as high as it could go. I pulled into a parking lot and checked everything out. coolant was a little low but nothing major so i added some water and turned the heater on full blast. After about 15 minutes it came back down to normal and we raced. I got the holeshot and he got a crappy launch and took by 2 cars the whole way. I looked back down at the gauge and the engine temp high again. So i new something was wrong and i decided to go home. The engine kept bogging and making a strange pinging noise, steam coming out the engine, stalling alot, check engine just came on.... I got home called the dealership and they towed it away. later today they told me that the thermostat had gotten loose and fallen into the pipe and blocked the coolant or something. I'm so pissed at toyota right now.....

Pinging noise = fuel doesnt have high enough octane = bad!

no its not fuel octane cuz i always fill it up with premium unleaded. I think i just described the noise wrong. Its like the sound you get when you try to start it up in 3rd gear from a stop, you know, like its coughing and sputtering.

If the engine is overheating then all the octane in the world can't help.
Lets see, engine overheats, so you RACE the car. Why am I finding it hard to believe you have much common sence.
Engine is overheating (top of gauge) you KEEP DRIVING? Again, where is that common sense.
Oh well, you will have a new thermostat and a ruined engine. I'm sure all future problems will be Toyota's fault, not yours.

i'm sorry, seriously i don't mean to be mean... but what kinda retard would have their temp gauge on high, and then go race the car? that was just not a smart move. a brand new car getting high temp, obviously something is wrong.

well the temp gauge came back down to normal and the check engine light wasn't on so i assumed that everything was ok right before i raced and i checked the coolant level. Oh well, you will have a new thermostat and a ruined engine. I'm sure all future problems will be Toyota's fault, not yours.
yup, its my fault the thermostat came loose and blocked the coolant:rolleyes:

in the old days the check engine light didn't come on until there was an emissions problem, I'm not sure, but I dno't think that that has changed any. That didn't occur until you got the pinging...of course in the mean time you warped the head, and scored the cylinder walls...

id hate to say this but the engine may not run right again. Overheating is bad for any motor and it sounds as if you forced it to go home and kept driving it after steam was coming out of the car, not good. Don't blame toyota down the road for any problems.

well autoxr, i got off the phone with the dealership and guess what? they didn't find any scored cylinder walls, or warped heads. In fact, i'm going to go pick up the car friday as soon as they get the new thermostat in. Don't be so quick to flame people
