View Full Version : 2001 gts with low 7800rpm fuel cut??!!

I just test drove a demo 2001 gts tonight and the fuel cut off seemed to kick in at 7800rpm, much like the 2002 models! wtf??? I tried it several times and the same thing happened each time. I checked the build date on the driver side door and it reads 05/01, which would indicate a late build for that year. I also noticed that the shifter seems canted over to the right during it's resting position which was a bit awkward. Yes I made sure the engine was fully warmed up and I'm also sure it's a 2001, the 10th digit in the VIN number is a 1. There's no front grille either. So what's the explanation for this? Maybe the tach was way off?? Or the engine was misshifted and replaced with a 2002 spec engine and ecu, I have no idea. Any 2001 gts owners out there experiencing anything like this? Any insight would be appreciated, I'm still holding out for a 2001 but at this point I may have to end up buying used instead. Sorry bout the long post...

Appreciate the responses guys! Can any other owners with a late model build 2001 gts actually confirm this result?? I'm thinking specifically cars built on or after approximately April 2001 (04/01). If that's the case then I will be sure to verify build dates before buying one...

I was told the cars made after 03/04 2001 have the 2002 limiter. I believe it was DD who told me, but I'm not sure, But I do remember that it was a respectable source that told me :)

Yo. I've got a '01 built in 5/01 and the rev limit is definitely above 8k.

I'm gonna go for a 'test drive' at lunch to be sure, but I'm almost sure the times I was 'bouncing' and looked down at the tach, It was bouncing between 8.1 and 8.3k, and I can land the 1-2 shift about 1 out of 3 times, so I'm pretty darn sure my cutoff is at 8.2. Will know for sure after lunch. ;)

Wow. Now I'm really curious. My car definitely came with the 'Misshift Prevention Package', i.e.- a tighter spring-to-center on the shifter, and the warning sticker on the dash that started reading like "The 6-speed transmission in your Celica is race-bred....". Can't wait 'till lunch. Hope it's good news from me.

I have a late 2001 model, and my tach reads a little over 8000 (probably 8050 RPM) at fuel cut off. Since I've seen early 2001's read the same way, it's hard to tell if my rev-limiter is lower or if my tachometer is off a little.

well I bought my GT-S brand new in Dec 2001, its a 2001 celica the only one available in my area, my cut off is at 8200-8300 somewhere around there my shift light is set at 8000 and a shift a sec after the lights comes on. I got a late 2001 model GT-S and it still shifts over 7800, with zero mods.

I'm back from my lunch/test. Had an awesome chicken salad sandwich. On the technical side, I verified my production date in the door jam was 5/01, and went up to fuel cut-off 4-5 times: 8100-8200 every time. Lift is at 6100-6200, so I know my tach can't be way off.

Celi7g,

What state are you in? Brunswick Toyota in Central NJ still has brand new 2001 Red Celica GTS, if you still want a new one...

Hey thanks to all for checking! So would it be safe to presume that the 8300rpm fuel cut should apply for all 2001's, even the later model ones?? The results up to this point are still slightly inconsistent though. Not sure what's up with the one I test drove or the car that IcedOut owns? Lomein, I'd love to pick up that brand new 2001 celi! All I've seen are slightly used (and probably abused) demos around here so far. Unfortunately for me I live on the other side of the continent so I'm trying to find something local.

Don't blame the car or the manufacturer for the slow-you-down features. Blame the ones who led Toyota to develop all these . Besides, I believe only USDM celicas receive these updates. Go figure.

From what I know (and tested), the fuel cut change came in effect around march to may of 2001 time frame.

I got a Sept '00 6spd (second production month for '01 model) and my car is exactly the same as my stolen '00 6spd (fab date March). Cut off is at 8300rpm and my tranny is exactly the same as the '00 one.

I tried a '01 model 6spd fab date of May and it had the new shifter linkage and prolly had the cut off lowered (I didnt drive it, just played with the shifter as it was a showroom car at the dealer).

I'm damn glad I got an '01, and I'm even more glad my '01 got the old 6spd linkage. :D

I got the best of both worlds hehe
