That's just a engine code denoting the engine in the US Market Celica GT-S (as well as its' incarnations overseas).
For Toyota engines:
The first part is the generation(?) of the engine (<b>2</b>ZZ-GE, <b>3</b>S-GTE, <b>4</b>A-G)
The second part is the engine family (2<b>ZZ</b>-GE, 3<b>S</b>-GTE, 4<b>A</b>-G)
The last part denotes other specs. (T = Turbo, Z = Supercharger, E = Elec. Fuel Injection, G = High performance head, F = Economy head, etc.) (2ZZ-<b>GE</b>, 3S-<b>GTE</b>, 4A-<b>G</b>)

In a nutshell...for the current Celicas:
1ZZ-FE & 2ZZ-GE
"ZZ" is the engine family, primarily bottom end design.
"1, 2, etc" is the iteration of the engine family, by no means it references to the displacement
FE: is the "economy head" where it produces a its power lower in the rpm range. Also it has a narrow valve angle configuration (exact numbers, I don't recall at this time). This head is also a DOHC design.
GE: is the "performance head", high end power, wide valve angle configuration, DOHC also
E: is the SOHC head
C: carburated
LC: lean carburated
Modifiers such as GTE, FTE, FZE, GZE, FSE, etc/
T: turbocharger
Z: supercharger
S: direct injection (gas)

Wow, nice explanation Tan. I never realized the significance of all of the letters.

i believe vvtlikick is right, e is electronic fuel injection, g and f refer to the performance and economy dohc's.

according to this site, C is California emissions, S for swirl intake ports(what's that?), and L is transversely mounted engine, but i guess Toyota doesn't use the L anymore cause if they did the 2zz-ge would be 2zz-gle, right?

You meant this site right?

Okay, I did forget to mention for the FE, E, GE, to say electronic fuel injection.
The Japanese RAV4 has the 2AZ-FSE, which is a direction injection motor (direction injection is new for 2001, where the air and fuel to directly injected into the combustion chamber using extremely high pressures. Normally, the fuel is injected into the intake manifold where it is mixed with air, as it enters the combustion chamber.) http://www.toyota.co.jp/Showroom/All_toyota_lineup/RAV4L/mechanism/images/c4_1_01.jpg
I actually had a 84 Corolla with the 4A-LC motor, yes it was transverse layout, but modifications were made to the 4A-C motor to lean it out slightly to maximize fuel efficiency. And it did have a carburator, but not California emissions.

i guess your right about the C, S and LC, but im pretty sure that a E means fuel injection, but not necessarily a sohc, because look at the 22r, it is sohc, carbureted and has no e, while 22-re is so titled because it has fuel injection.

forgot about the famous "R" motors. It was thinking in the lines of the 3.0L V6 found the in mid-late 80's Truck & 4Runner....the 3VZ-E motor, which was a SOHC motor. The 3VZ-FE motor found in the 92-93 Camry/Es300 was DOHC

ZZ in the engine code means the engine is all alloy. Qwertop, you're right, E does stand for electronic fuel injection. F and G refer to the state of tune of the DOHC design.

one more thing....does this apply to all (european, jap, us...ect) motors?
