ok... this might have to be like one of the most stupid questions ever, but i gotta ask anyway. how come when people race, they are always like, "my tires spun out cuz' they're new" i don't get it though, wouldn't new tires stick to the ground more than balding tires? i know it's a tire question, and should go in that forum, but it just seemed more like a newbie question... thanks.

I think that's because new tires are too smooth, they have to get a bit rougher to get some good grip.
I'm a newbie too, so this might not be true :)

new tires have a coating on them left over form the molding process that needs to be worn off. doesn't take long.

Losers always need an excuse.
Tires do grip a little better when they are broken in (slippery mold release compound and a smooth hard surface, "scuffs" grip better), but not enough to make a difference in anything but a *very* close race.
A good racer will know his tires are a little less grippy and adjust accordingly.

actuallhy its all about the size \of the contact patch(the part of the tire that is touching the road)...if the tires are brand new there is less surface area of rubber touching the road becasue the tire doens flex as much as when its broken in..aldso balder tires usualy can flex more and will have more surface area of rubber touchign the road surface making more grip..thats why race teams use slicks..to get all the rubber they can to touch the road...but also brand new tires for about 50 miles still have the chem, icals and stuff that they are talking about in the last reply....i used to race for mazda in the scc pro cup series..we had an MX-6 and at the beggining of the race when the brand new tires were on we would be all over the trqack for aboujt 2 laps..then the tires would break in and grip good..
Hope this helped

yeah... thanks a lot guys for the replies... it does seem like losers always have to have an excuse, they can never just admit that the other car is just better... well thanks again, makes more sense now.

Probably more from getting heat into the tires than anything else.

Yeah, when your tires are warmed up, they are a bit stickier. That's why at the drags, they do a burn-out before staging...
