is it just me or is toyota or more specifically celica paint horrible? The orange peel texture in some places, and with the thin paint, it chips and scratches so easily!

My mom has the same problem with her 03 Maxima. After the first year, the front end was chipped to hell. She barely drives it, too.

Yep, we all know about the infamous Toyota paint. The funny thing is if you look at a brand new Forerunner or any Lexus you will notice that the paint looks a hell of a lot better. Hell, even a friend of mine's 2004 Super White Corolla has better paint than my Celica. I think Celica owners just got screwed all the way around. I wonder why all Toyota's can't look the same LOL paint quality wise.

Agreed. I doubt there are many cars w/ paintjobs that can withstand small rocks hitting the car that's running 60+ mph.

If you think Toyota's paint is bad then don't buy a Subaru. Toyota's paintjobs are light years ahead of Subarus. I should know, I've owned three of them!

It seem like there was some law that was passed about how paint manufacturers could not use some materials that makes the paint harder to chip.......(lead?) because of environmental reasons around 1999. From what I've been told.

The paint on my 2000 is in excellent condition. Few touchups on the front from chips but there's no orange peel, no swirls, and shines up impressively after a good coat of Zaino.

Much better than the paint job on my 2003 Mazda6. There were chips and scratches from road debris all over that and orange peel everywhere.

If you think it's bad on the Celica, don't ever buy a car that was painted in the US after those EPA regulations went in place.

[My Paint looks AWESOME after near five years of destruction.

Distpite nurmerous daily driver dings and your expected rock chips on the front, my paint looks like a mirror (when clean)!

I have no complaints about toyota paint. The only thing I can think of is that their silver is awfully dull.

your car is silver... its harder to see the scratches in the clear and deeper... try owning a darker colored celi, like black, carbon blue, spec blue, etc...

LOL, my main complaint is that after 2 years my car looks like it is 5 years old, mainly from road debris and dings put in it from variuos things. All of my driving in this car is done on the interstate. When I had all of my previous cars I lived in town so they never go driven on the interstate. I would say that Toyota paint isn't necessarily that bad but there are a lot of cars out there that have much better paint jobs than any Toyota I have ever seen, and yes I take great care of my car. I guess the absolute thing that I hate most about all the Toyotas I have seen and what my car has the most of is "orange peel". I have it really bad down the doors, rear quarters, and front bumper. The front fenders and everything on the top is perfect. I dunno I jsut like paint finishes that look as smooth as glass and no matter how much you wax or no matter how many coats of Zain you use I jsut cannot get that deep luster of an orange peel free car. Now don't get me wrong the car shines up nicely but just doesn't look as good as it should IMO.

That is probably the reason I do not like mine. It is silver and as we all know silver just does not have the depth that you can get in a blue, black, or even a red car.

Anyone know what brand of paint Toyota uses?

Toyota sucks... i have like a billion rock chips on the hood but it came like that when i bought it. A bunch of clips on the front bumper, but oddly enough, more chips on the hood than the bumper.

Honda's paint is pretty decent.. it feels firm and my friend's accord doesn't have any chips at all. Acura too (which is the same as honda)... i accidently dropped a small hammer on my friend's RSX-s, and not even a scratch. I was about to flip out lol

I feel the same way! I have a white 02 Celi and it seems a lot older then it already is! Oxidation sucks on a white car! It's not even " Super white " anymore... :chuckles:

I have a ton of rock chips on my front bumper and hood.

I'm seriously concerning a repaint very soon. Can't stand lookin at how ugly my car is now, paint wise. :(

the reason the paint probably sucks is because its an water base paint.. or atleast the Sequoia.. Tundras and Seinna's are.. and yes the paint jobs suck.. They have the orange peel look also.. I really dont know why... I work on the doorline and have never been able to go in the paint shop at TMMI.. They got some many rules about.. what u can wear and what not (shampoo..hairspray..etc...)

I agree toyota paint blows. I had my bumper repainted a year ago, and it is so chipped, it looks like i have had the car for ten years. VW paint is nice. you can wash a vw and it feels like it is waxed. I waxed my car and it stays smooth feeling for maybe two days.

I don't have have any orange peel issues, but the front end of the car chips like crazy. I'm considering having the front end of the car repainted with a higher quality paint to try and prevent this. The piant that has been used is so soft, not only does it chip but bugs seem to get embedded in it.

Sounds like you're just using a crappy wax then.

Took a claybar to mine and Zainoed it last November. It's still very smooth despite being beat up by all the Ohio winter driving.

Aftermarket paint is subject to the same environmental regulations and problems that go with it. U.S. regulations are actually tougher. Best to keep your 'JDM' paint as long as possible.

This year, Japan's automakers are giving up their organic solvent paint and introducing water based too. So it's only going to get worse.

does paint have anything to do with it or is it the clear coat? my stock color had lots of chips in it hopefully this audi paint holds up.

I dunno how your Zaino lasts that long. Perhaps it is just because I wash mine once a week while you may not wash yours as often, but when I put Zaino on my car the finish doesn't seem to last but like maybe a month or so. I put around 8-9 coats of Zaino on my car last November and it seems to have held up pretty well, but byt the end of December early January the car started to look dull again and feels like it needs waxed again. I dunno I love how Zaino looks for the first couple of days it is applied but I am pretty unimpressed with it considering the amount of work and product that is needed to get decent results. I seem to keep flip flopping back and forth between Zaino and regular wax. All of my friends that are detailer's say that they do not like Zaino simply because after a week or so the finish begins to take on a dull plastic-like look which may be what I am seeing. It looses that polished wet look after a few days, even when you use their wash and wipe it down with Z16 spray detailer every now and again. I dunno maybe it has simply worn off LOL.

Even with just a single coat on the car it shines up after a wash and beads rain up in those fascinatingly tiny beads for a good 3-4 months for me.

Maybe you're using too much when applying it? Not giving it enough time to bond? Do you use ZFX or still using Z1?

I just don't see how you can call a paint job that holds up this well after 5 years crappy.

No sign of UV caused fading or other issues on the roof.

Are you a Zaino user? Is your car garage kept or does it sit outside all of the time? I think my car is in pretty damn good shape but the paint just doesn't seem to have the depth and shine that it did when it was new no matter what I do to it. Sure if you wash it clay it, wash it again, then put like 9 coats of Zaino on it, it looks damn good for a bout 2 weeks but then after that it kind of gets dull looking and the reflectivity of it goes to ****. Then again my car sits outside all of the time 24/7 365 days a year.

By the way why is your hood different color than your front bumper and front two fenders?

NoUse4aName
02-15-2005, 02:12 PM
Garaged Zaino user only have a single coat of z5 on in those pics.

There are a few touch up spots on the front bumper, some done better than others. But it does match the hood well. Think that's just a lighting issue in that pic.

Hmmm....LOL I tend to take really good care of my car and I use Zaino a lot but I would be embarassed to take pics of my car right now. It cleans up well but lately I haven't been as nice to it as I have been in the past. Here is pics of what it looked like 8 months ago or so and this is without Zaino, just plain old Meguiar's wax and polish.

I feel that Zaino works really well. I apply a coat of Z3 and a coat of Z5 about once a year. I'm always amazed at how shiny the paint gets simply from a wash. If I use the Zaino detailer spray after a wash, its amazing.

Z3? That's for non-clear coat cars. Even the black has clear coat doesn't it?
