View Full Version : Dropped off my downpipe for modification

Just dropped my downpipe off yesterday at CJ Motorsports (MR2 guys will know this place) to have their fabricator modify it. I have the XS kit, here's a shot of what the downpipe looks like from them.

http://users.ameritech.net/diabolus/downpipe.jpg

What they are doing is a pseudo divorced setup for the wastegate. Right now there is a big flat flange directly in front of the wastegate, which not only adds significant back pressure, but sends the wastegate flow directly into the exducer flow. Not a very efficient setup. The flang is being modified with a wall extending down into the turbine housing to block wastegate flow into the exducer. Then there will be a "divorced" pipe that will blend the flow back in downstream before the flex joint. The fabricator is ordering up the materials he needs and says it should be ready in about three weeks.

sound similar to what sport compac car did to their proyect matrix, because of the boost creeps.

I love how you say, not very efficient...everything XS did with that kit is wrong..good mod to your pipe though

There are definitely some flaws in the design. I'm working to correct them. Like I've said before, I got a very good deal on the kit, and the way I see it it should be a good setup with a few important modifications. The bracket for the turbo should be in my hands shortly plus an upgraded air filter (different than the problematic one.).

I would hardly say that "everything" they did was wrong. The fuel system alone absolutely shames the SF system and I would say is on par or better than the C2 system. The turbo selection is fine, the piping and intercooler are high quality and the kit is very thorough and complete.

That mod is a clever idea, it gives a better flow, and sure you want it...

The C2 kit doesn't have a fuel system.....it is completely stock...lol I actually like the way SF had his fuel system set up. It works and is quite good for low boost levels. Plus you don't have to spend $400+ to get the XS PFC map tuned just to run 6psi.

Edit: Although, I do wish I had the XS fuel system once I get a motor built. but until then....SF is just fine.

Those of you who contacted me about making this...make sure you keep your eye on this thread. If Jesse finishes his first (quite likely) than I would ask him if his guy can make a few more of them so that you other XS kit owners who are interested may own one.

I believe they also had it done on their project SVT focus..... surprising that manufaturers would still make this design error.

I think what jesse meant to say is the fuel management. I would agree with him totally. XS uses the pfc, c2 uses the e-manage, and the stafford uses split second fuel controler (aka black box). The only reason i would choose XS or C2 is the ability to further tune should you decide to upgrade. I don't believe that the black box has that capability. Someone correct me if im wrong.

Anyways back on topic, nice mod jesse. I hope to see your car around this summer.

If you decided to upgrade much further than the way the kit came, both the emanage OR split sec should be scrapped for the PFC. However, I do agree that the XS kit had better parts, but that is why it was like $1500 more....and knowbody even knows what the C2 kit even puts down hp wise so.....for its price, the SF kit was a GREAT alternative to XS.

That guy is Troy at XS Engineering. The bracket shipped on Friday, and was only $15.

I meant fuel management. The XS kit has a PFC, larger injectors and a larger fuel pump. The C2 kit can come with a PFC as an option and the SF kit uses a bunch of problematic black boxes.

SF also had a tuner kit in which the PFC and larger injectors could be used. PFC is not really an "option" for the C2 kits..you just tell him you don't want the emanage and then buy your own PFC...sounds kind of like SF's tuner kit except for the SF tuner kit was onl like $3000 and the C2 without emanage would still be alot more than that.
