View Full Version : undercar neons wired to alarm?!?!

I'm going to get some red neon's for under my car, and I can wire them to a switch so I can turn them on or off(they're illegal in these parts). But, I'd also like to have them wired to my factory alarm system so that when I press the unlock button on my keyless entry, the neon's flash with the rest of the lights on my car. Anyone done this, or know how it might be done?

Shouldn't be a big problem, I would use a secondary relay off the indicator relay to drive them.

Could you tell me where I might find this in my car? and uhm, how would I wire it through a switch so that I still have on, off, and alarm settings? thanks

do you have your dome light hooked up to your alarm? i know i don't.... my alarm has a dome light out. you could probably hook them to that... then when you disarm the alarm, the neons will light up til the car is started. i think. you could do some kinda relay too . it seems hard though. since if you tied it to your parking lights they'd come on whenever your parking lights came on.

i don't know what the "indicator' relay is so i can't help w/ that.

don't know how accesorry outs on alarms work either, but maybe thats something that can be used.

i'd like to do this as well with neons in the hoodscoop and behind the front grille.

since they're illegal, I don't want them on while i'm driving. so, I only want them to flash when my alarm goes.

OK Neons are Illegal to drive W/ the only legal colors are White and Yellow..... Red and Blue is very Illegal....

I have all my neons connected to my Alarm remote... I used a Relay to do it and all alarms uaually have a spare programmible channel..... Most alarms give off a Negative or ground so you'll need to do a reversed Auto Relay setup.... So the neons get power straight from the battery but the Alarm uses a low current to Open and close the circuit... Then Program that channel to stay on unless you change it... I set mine up to turn off after 5 hrs. Neons don't pull a lot of Juice I think my undercar kit pulls like 5amps at most and maybe. I've left my neons on for 2 days once and the battery still worked.

W/ my setup I can turn them on/off W/ the 3rd channel on my remote Which is both buttons pressed. I can turn them on / off While the alarm is armed or while I'm driving.... It's cool.
I would do a write up but every alarm system is different and some are soooo cheap that they don't have that kinda option.

Here is the schematic of how it's done..... Sorry It's sloppy I did it at work on a cheezy paint program...

Just a note on that, the fuse for the coil side of the relay is way too big, it'll only drive a few milliamps to switch. Unless you use an inline 1/4" fuse holder you won't get a blade type fuse with that low a rating. Make sure you check the spec of the relay and correctly fuse it.

You could power them by your tail light fuse if you want them to flash with your alarm. I did it, back in the day..~

wouldn't they be on whenever my taillights are on though? just a thought ;)

Yes they would... It would be better to take the source off the alarm so the lights will only flash when the alarm is armed or disarmed..... This isn't recommended tho... Turning Neons on and off constantly will kill them quickly

Ohh I forgot to mention put the 25 amp fuse no more than 1 foot from the battery

can't you just hook it to your dome light???

yeah if you want your dome light on while your neons are on. and alarms don't make the dome light flash... The dome light turns on when the alarm is disarmed.
