View Full Version : hid went out!
Well after installing my HID's everything was all good. Everything was working and when I was putting everything back together I decided to turn them on and one did not turn back on. What can be wrong. One side work and the other doesn't. I checked the bulb and it doesn't appear to be damaged. I think that it might be the ballast, beccause none of the fuses are blown, and the wiring is all good. Please help! Thanks. Oh yeah I have the visions.

let me take a guess which side went out...the passenger side?
the problems always seem to be on that side. i always thought it was the ballast, but it could also be the wiring on our cars. the first time i had the kit i had trouble with the ballast tho. after i got my replacement, no problems...*knock on wood*
yeah it is on the passenger side. Do you have the same kit? So all you did is get the ballast replaced and now it works fine. I know that the sock harness still works because I pluged the stock bulb back on and turned on the lights and it works. So I think it has to be the ballast.

You did check the fuses and everything, right? BlackGT had one go out on him, but that was because he changed the wrong fuses.
Check my site and the HID install to make sure you changed the right fuses.....if you didn't look already.
That's all I would know to look for. Mine didn't turn on at all at first, but that was because I had the wires switched backwards.
yeah I checked you install guide before I started the install. I replaced the fuses that were circled on your guide.
Today I actually tested to see if the ballast is not wroking, I switched the ballast that doesn't work to the side that does work and it didn't work. So hopefully it doesn't take long to get it swaped out.

Good to hear you figured the problem out. Good luck getting it fixed up.
So....just curious... is one HID bulb better than 2 halogens? hehe
yeah actually the one HID bulb is brighter then 2 halogen bulbs. lol!

just had the SAME problem happen to mine today (i searched, decided to add to this really old thread), we installed it today, it worked for a few hours, was all good, and then on my to my friend's house at night my friend comes out to check out the lights, and was like "dude, your passenger one is blown?" so i'm like WTF....
so do you still think it can be the bulb? or the ballast itself?
and this is in the performance section?

Are your HIDs plug and play (plugs directly into the stock bulb wiring), or do they draw power directly from the battery using a separate harness? and this is in the performance section?
Maybe they're "high performance" HIDs. :D

Quick question, is there certain care that is needed to maintain HIDs. Ex: should I avoid turning them on and off repeatedly? (not that I would keep flashing my lights) but times when I start and stop the car to run into a store quick?

well, i know how much we all hate reposts of the same topic, that's why i just did a search and saw that the original poster (from 2001 lol) had the same problem, so i just added to it...yes, it IS a plug and play kit, no drawing anything from the main battery of the car....i was so frustrated last night because i had JUST bought it that i decided to assess the damage, took apart the light and bumper and all that...and then realized, that when i took OFF the engine plastic cover on the left side (which, just underneath that, i had secured my ballast), that light started to WORK again (i know, wtf?) so i'm guessing it has something to do from the pressure pushing down on the ballast or the wiring from the ballast in that area by the engine plastic cover? weird huh? should i just leave the ballast there, or move it, because for now i'm driving without that engine plastic, since it seems like that's what's messing that up...

i ALSO have the same question for mine...plug and play h7 kit with 8000K output....how much should i be aware of restarting and turning off that thing?

Turning them on and off quickly will certainly shorten their lifespan. Also, you should shut them off before turning off the car, to avoid the power surge condition that occurs.

i see, but what if i'm equipped with the auto-on feature when it's night time....? wouldn't the light turn off with the car anyways? are you saying i should start using the E-BRAKE method of overriding the auto-on from now on..?
and should i do the same for when i START the car? as in, turn on the car first, wait, and then turn on the lights? just wanna be careful you know haha

Yeah, that would probably be a good idea, too. The same goes for halogen bulbs as well, but it's much more stressful on HIDs.

Make sure to check your connections...
Some time people plug the wrong side on the connector..
Some manufacturer had the wires switched around...
If you want to find out if the bulb or ballast is defact.... just switch the HID bulb around... you'll know which one is the problem simplist way...

Just curious, what brand HID do you have?

Since I just got my HIDs I feel like a noob but when they first turn on do they flash bright, then dim and slowly get brighter?

^^yeah, mine do that too, i think that's called soft start or warm start, so it doesn't overload the circuit too quickly from the beginning...IMO, i kinda like seeing it though progressing lol
btw, posted up pics of the HIDs i had trouble with (but got them to work fine again)

Every HID does that...
Ballast needs time to charge up the capacitor.... it's bumping 12v power input to 23000v......

^^^sweet I figured.

Just curious, does the separate harness actually make a difference?

If you are talking about relay kit.....
It'll depend on what kind of ballast you have....
Certain ballast draws too much current fron the start, it will over load the stock harness.......
Ballast that I sell has soft start that draws less current at start up....so it's safe for stock harness...
My HID kit doesn't required relay kit.....
