so i just started my car and headed out of the parking lot. the car was cold so idle was at 1.3k at the moment. as i roll out of the lot--going about 1 MPH--i start leaning the shifter into first (just LEANING it into the gate in preparation for the shift--my clutch pedal wasn't even depressed yet) and it slid right in! no grind, no muss no fuss. can somebody tell me why it didn't grind? :monkey:

Because you CAN shift like that, but it's bad for the car.

You shouldn't even be touching the shifter, yet alone leaning on it without having the clutch pedal depressed.

^^ yup, th eonly time you should be touching the shifter is when shifting.

You can shift all gears like that. As the rpms hit the right spot it slides right in. I do it on work trucks all the time. hehe but not on my car.

If you rev match to the right rpm, the clutch is not needed. You have to hit it exactly, though or else it will slightly damage your tranny.

don't get me wrong, i'm usually a 2-hands-on-the-wheel driver and i remove my right hand only to shift, but i--as well as many other drivers i've seen--drive a little sloppier in the lots because well... it's not real driving :P

anyways you wanna give me a better explanation than that?

Did you not read Rob and Barefoott's posts?

You want a more technical explanation?

The output shaft from the transmission, which goes to the wheels, was spinning because you were drifting down a hill, which means your 1st gear was spinning. The input is spinnning from your 1300rpm engine with the clutch engaged. Because the wheels were moving, the speed of spinning freely 1st gear is the same as the spinning input shaft gear, so, it's easier to get the teeth lined up, and voila, the 1st gear slips right onto the input gear. Does that make any sense? You can do this in any gear. Say for example at 3000rpm in 3rd gear you are going 25mph. If you are in neutral drifting at 25 mph, and rev the engine above 3000 rpm, give the shifter a little pressure into 3rd, when the engine comes down to 3000rpm, the gear will usually slide right into place.
