Holy Sh1t... smoke coming out of the hood

I was at a stop light and waiting for green. I accidentally let go of the clutch with the gear in 1st so I tried to turn the ignition on again. The engine choked on me as it does occasionally due to my idle being rich. Being panicky cuz all the traffic behine me was waiting, I just kept trying when all of a sudden, "poof~" sound came out of the hood along with a bit of smoke.....

A bit after, the engine finally turned on and I drove off without noticing much change in the car. What could have caused the smoke and the poof sound? I'm a bit worried since this is the first time I saw smoke come out of the hood. Nothing seems to be burned and no strange smell....

It was a genie appearing and starting your engine, then vanishing. They always come and go with a *POOF* and smoke.

it was white.... someone suggested it to me, it could have just been a back fire caused by cranking the engine just when it was about to turn on....
