View Full Version : Rusty Hubs Gotta Go - How?

I have stock hubs/brakes on my gts. How can I keep the hub material from rusting. I've tried and been successful with SOS pads and naval jelly rust remover but it just comes back. Looks bad, need help. Would paint work? what kind? How hot do the hubs get?

i wire wheeled mine down to the metal, then painted with a clear coat. looks excellent so far.

i just painted mine silver. you don't have to worry about some getting over on the rotor, since the brake will rub that off and make a sharp straight line for ya. i'd post pics but i can't attach em. just paint the whole damn thing. tape of the rotor as best you can, making sure to get all edges painted. then i taped off the bolts so paint didn't get on them. then just paint all of it.

Yup, just shoot the rotors. I left mine on the car so I could get the heatshields too.

Rust came back on mine w/ Clone's method. On one I tried something else. Go to auto parts store and pick up this stuff called Extend that is used to stop rust on surfaces that have some rust. Its a primer that you then paint over. I cleaned up most of the rust on a wheel, then painted the hub with Extend. Then painted silver like Clone's way. That one is by far the best, and I just did it really quick and was not to careful about coverage.

Look around the site, flipping thru all the pics. I'm sure there are some in there.

The rotors get a little nasty again after about 8 months, especially when there is a great deal of rain and snow in your area. I'm warming up for my annual rotor/caliper painting day now.

Clone
You painted right over the rotor and when you used the brakes it just took the paint off and the surface loks nice and clean now like in the pics?
Thanx

Well, at least you'll have money coming in, right? hehe....one more year for me.

Do you need to use high-temp paint for that? Or will any normal paint do?

I have a question... are rusty hubs "normal"? Mine are getting REALLY bad. I was going to take off the wheels soon and use some Rust Off or something to get rid of it (temporarily at least).. but then I was thinking.. and looking at other cars.. and no one else's hubs seemed to be so bad. Also, It seems that everyone in this thread who has rusty hubs drives a 2k.. does anyone with a late model 2k1 or 2k2 have this problem? (Yeah, it might be a little soon.. but rust started showing up on mine pretty early on).

Being that my car is still under the 36k warranty.. I'm thinking of taking in my car and complaining.. it just doesn't seem reasonable that I have to worry about rust ANYWHERE on a car that is only 2 years old and still under mfr. bumper to bumper warranty. I'm wondering they might have done something to the 2k2 models or even the 2k1 models to prevent the rust....

If that fails.. I might just get the AEM big brake kit.. start a GP or something in a couple months.

hey i have a question about that first pic clone posted... if you take a look at the hub you'll also see that thin ring that comes next and protrudes from the hub... my concern is that on one side it is attached to the rotor.. on the other side it is NOT... which side has it right???? its the aread in red in the picture... clone i apologize for thieving this off of you but i dont have a digi to show my point.. THanks dood...

That's the left brake from what I can see in the picture.

What do you mean? That ring is always connected isn't it?

I've decided not to paint the drum part of the rotors. I noticed that there was some ridges that might provide some friction between the wheel and the brake. Not sure if that matters or not but I'll just use some rust remover every year when I jack the car up for winter instead.

CloNeGTS

Um....ok. Not real sure what you are seeing here with the ring and then the ridges and stuff. There should be no friction between the wheel and brake. The 5 lugs do that job.

As for the rusty brakes...yes, it is everyone. I met a guy on Sunday with an 02 Action Package GTS and he was asking how to do it too. His were nasty too.

Guys, at least on my car, I could pull the rotors right off. A Coke can fits perfectly in the hole in the center of the rotor. Just set the rotor on the can and spray away. I'm also serious about that Extend stuff. If you want, I'll take pics of the rear discs after one winter in salt and snow showing the differences.

Edit: also helpful to remove the flaky rust at the cooling fins. Take a paint scraper and tap on the rotor right there with the edge of the blade. Most of the rust flakes pop right off.

I used a wire brush to get the rust off the hubs, then naval jelly from the auto parts store. Then I used a high-temp (500 deg) engine paint(black) to paint the hubs. It's looking good so far...

Guys I want to paint my rusty rotors but i am a little feeling weird about putting lots of paint rite on the rotor. I mean..isnt that bad for the brakes and the calipers?? What happens to all that paint..

Brian...are u saying u used a 500 deg pain directly on your rotor like clone Gts's. Also Brian..hows yours holding up and do u have a picture of black rotors? let me know

peace.

2 words: bead cabinet... you can mask off the friction face with tape after you clean it with alcohaul and let it dry. then you can paint it with high temp paint. pull off the masking tape and clean up the edges with some xylene or thinner. you might consider bead blasting the whole thing, painting the whole thing with heavy duty high temp paint then getting them turned (on a brake rotor lathe) and put back on the car for a premium paint finish. heck- the shop i hang around with just buys brembo rotors (which are bare) and paints them blue so they maintain a color like other more expensive painted rotors (AEM).

I used high temp black gloss (stole it from my dad who bought it for his grill) but I don't think it would matter!

i blasted the whole rotor w/out pulling it off like Clone's pic above. Did it about 2+ months ago...brakes took off overspray in about 5 mins (only two stopsigns ;) Had no problems whatsoever..you'll be fine and dandy.........

how any coats?

and so you sprayed everything (rotor and calipers) silver with high temp spray and then followed by painting the caliper in some color ...

Hmm.....I didn't pull anything off when I did that. I pulled back the caliper and shot everything, including the heat shield.

I used about 3 coats. It has stood up really well for about a year now thru all sorts of weather. The edges need to be cleaned up because the braking surface on the rotor still rusts when it's wet out and that rust gets on the edge of the paint. Just a little cleanup needed, no big deal.

hey i ordered folia tec caliper painting kit and i was wondering .. for the hubs themselves..did you guys just use regular rustoleum or do u need high temp paint for the hubs as well??

SEASIDE-GRAPHIX

one way to get rid of it if the money is thier you can get new rotors i got the ones from aem and they have a coating that they say is rust free bottle has them at the best price ive seen and they look good.. and improved stopping alot

CloNeGTS

Hubs should be high temp just for safe measure. The discs will get really damn hot and I'm sure a sufficient amount of that heat makes it to the hub itself.

if you paint you beter use high temp the hub gets hot

im paintin my calipers this weekend..heres the question for the last time.. ive talked to some people and they said youre not supposed to get anything on the rotors...they said the asbestos in the calipers are gonna get screwed up from clamping on the paint and that my brakes can get screwed up if shoot the rotor (hi temp silver rustoleum) is this true or is this not...all u people who have shot their entire rotor...please a quick post saying your brakes are fine or screwed up or whatever..id appreciate it.

Just fine for street, highway and autocross.....and I've shot the things twice. No probs or decreases in braking power.
