My dumbass just got a 55 in a 35 this morning. How do the points and **** work, and do they offer traffic school to get out of the points? My quick search on the internet gave nothing, and I am waiting to hear back from my insurance agent.

I was "racing" a Civic EX, and ended it at 60. They heard us coming and lasered us. Fortunately for me, the engine was still cold (even after a few minutes of driving:confused: ) or else I would've been at 65 by the time they shot me. We also did not get the reckless driving or racing citations. Stupid road should have a higher speed limit. 2 lanes on both sides, with absolutely nothing on either side. Oh well, lesson learned.

even with a traffic school, the points may come off your license but will not come off your insurance

Anything 15MPH or over is a manditory Reckless driving. The cop wont give it to you, but the judge will. Its minumun of 60 day suspension unless you can get it reduced. Your looking close to $500 for the ticket too for 20MPH over.

You can get speeding 20+ without it being reckless and you can get Reckless even if you are not speeding. I got a ticket for 21 over but I didn't get Reckless. I asked him if he'd put 19 over instead because it's a different amount of points and he said "Believe me I'm doing you a much bigger favor by not giving you reckless". I checked into it and he's very true. Mandatory court appearance, bigger fines, on your record longer. Reckless is much, much worse.

Here is a PDF file that explains the points and stuff. (http://2000xyr.freeyellow.com/misc/dmv.pdf) I got it off of the VA DMV website.

This is not true Jim, I'm living proof. You can prepay any speeding ticket if your not cited for anything else. I got a 26 over and 20 over and prepayed the first and saw the judge on the second and he dropped it to a $40 fine. No threat ever made to reckless, a judge can't just assign it to you, you have to be cited for it. Also in VA it's 20 over or over 80 for reckless.

As for points, you get 6 points for 20+, and if you get 14(?) in a year you go on probation, any other tickets and you get suspened. Driving school give you +4 points but it isn't really like positive points. If you still get 14 points in one year, no matter how many positive points you have you still go on probation. It's a pretty damn stupid system.

So, for those that have gotten the tickets, has your insurance gone up? From what I understood from my insurance agent, there is only a chance that it will get reported and added on your insurance. 6 points, huh. Damn, in PA, if you get 6 points, you get suspended, although a speeding ticket would be like 3 or 4 points.

Eh, it's all crap, speed limits are too low for todays cars, most people suck at driving anyway, so it doesn't matter. And it should go by the momentum of the vehicle; so someone in a 5000+lbs SUV has to drive twice as slow as me in my 2500lbs Celica. And a guy on a motorcycle has no limits :)

don't worry if it's just a speeding ticket just prepay it and it will save you some hassle. since you're not sure if your court day is the judge's good-mood day - like playing the lotto !! :D

I got a 52 over 35 therefore 2 points on my record. I wasn't racing. I was just going with the flow and people ahead of me were going 60/65 on a 35 and I just turned out to be the unlucky one. Insurance sees if it's reckless driving, if it's not they won't give you a hard time since they speed too !! If it's reckless driving then they are much harder on you since you might wreak havoc on the road and it's only fair for them to collect more money from you in case they need to distribute a big payout.

i've gotten more speeding tickets than i can think of in the past few years. they've all been like 74 in a 55 or 72 in a 55, etc. my insurance did go up and after my accident in november (it was my fault because i was trying to go thru a yellow light and the dumbass girl in front of me stopped!- the nerve!). anyways, after my accident, Geico dropped me. Even though i had one ticket go off this past january, i still had to pay $1700 for a 6-month policy thru progressive. i've learned that speeding just isn't worth all the hassel anymore. you're right, the speeds are way too low around this damn state! i'd go to court anyways, just in case the cop doesn't show up. if he does, you could always plead not guilty and ask why he pulled you over and not the other people in front of you that were going faster or something like that. good luck though.....

Let me guess: It was on Sudley Road right?

At least it wasn't on the 25 mph part of sudley rd towards Centreville Rd.

I know, the speed limits around Manassas are too low.

No, it was on Ashton, just after the stop sign at Crestwood, where there is absolutely nothing on either side of the road. I wouldn't be able to use the other people were speeding too excuse, since it was just the two of us speeding, and they got both of us.
Maybe if the damn intake and exhaust wasn't so damn loud, they wouldn't have heard us coming. :)
