There's no way it could be physically gone. You'd need a smaller belt to run the accessories without it. It's mounted below the alternator, and has metal lines coming off of it, which become the thick black lines that run next to the left side of the engine.

Ummm they are jerking your chain if you did not have an a/c compressor I believe your belts would have to be rerouted, I have never really looked at the accessory belts on the celica and don't know if there is more than one. But the a/c compressor looks like any other accessory on the engine. Big hunk of metal with a pulley and clutch assembly.

I'll go outside and grab a picture of mine.
Actually, yours are fine enough. The alternator is the thing that has the copper inside of it, and right below it is your A/C compressor. There are the metal tubes coming off of it that lead into rubber hoses. You have a belt on it too, perhaps it is lose and you might not be turning it enough to make it 100% functional.

You might need Freon, no idea what the dye is. Let me look in the toyota manual and see what it says.

If you download volume 2 of the celica repair manual, and go to section AC you will find information on the system, troubleshooting, the drive belt, the lines, etc.

:werd: That would suck for a noob to have a shop do this to them and actually succeed... shell out 1600 for something that isnt missing at all...

You can print it out yourself. Download the Celica Manual, go to section AC and it'll show diagnostics there. I.E. if you are wondering on your refrigerant volume, it'll give you the following information:
Run engine @ 1500 rpm, blower speed on "HI" position, a/c switch on, temperature control dial at "cool" position, fully open the doors. Then it'll show the symptoms: "Bubbles present in sight glass, no bubbles, no temperature difference between compressor inlet and outlet, blah blah.

hahahahahah, I can't belive that shop did that to you dude. thats pretty ****ing funny. Take your **** to midas, Have them fill the system, they use a freon that has **** in it that shows up under ultra violet light...at night, or in the garage, we hit the engine with a black light, and you can see the sh*t glown where its leaking(If its out of freon)
An AC system should never ever run out of freon, unless its leaking. So if it is out of freon, It's got a bad o-ring, or a puncture in the condensor.

If they said it was gone, chances are they meant that it doesn't work anymore.
Done any belt changes or installs under the hood recently?
Mine, along with a few others, stopped working after installing belts and such.
Probably a short somewhere.

okay well i went back there with a printout of that sheet. then he was all trying to cover his ass and tell me i needed different parts. he said that i do have the compressor but the part on the left side of it is missing. he said the clutch part of it is. can you tell if its missing by looking at my pictures? he said i didnt need a condensor but i need some filter that goes into the right side of it(drivers side)?

Your compressor looks perfect from the outside, so their BS continues. Not sure about a filter, though, but I can see it as more BS to line their pockets. :thumbdown

Don't go to that shop again! You're beggin to get taken. Go to Midas like suggested, or even Toyota, but that shop is either very dishonest, very incompetent, or both.

Go to another shop man, these guys know less than me and that's just sad. :puke:

Your compressor could really break down. We cannot see it from the outside.
It usually happens if there is no compressor oil inside of the ac system.
No way, compressor doesn't cost so much. A new one from www.parts.com costs about $350. There are many other choices of the aftermarket, remanufactured, or used compressors.
Look at the Denso compressor:
http://www.densoaftermarket.com/online_catalog.php?part=comp&year=2000&make=TOYOTA&model=CELICA
Its type is 10PA15L - very popular compressor.
Everything else looks correct:
1. You need a new receiver-drier that is inside of the canister at the side of the condenser.
2. Flush and vacuum the ac system to get rid of water if the system was open.
3. Compressor oil PAG 46. Dye is for detecting leaks.
4. Freon R134a in Celica is less than 1 lb. Actually, it's very cheap. But real freon R12 is extremely expensive (it's prohibited). You don't need it.
5. O-rings must be changed to new ones.
6. Charge the system.
You can try to change your compressor yourself, but you must change o-rings. Then you can charge R134a at any shop.

^^ reading his knowledge of the system, makes it really obvious what idiots the guys at that shop are!
$20.00 Down The Toilet. Go To Another Shop. System Probably Needs To Be Charged With R134 & Dye, See If System Works After That. If It Does You Have A Leak. Depending On How Bad The Leak Is You May Need To Drive The Car For A Week Or So & Take Car Back So They Can Check For Leaks & Repair As Necessary. Might Be An Electrical Problem But I Doubt It.

When my condenser had a crack and there was absolutely no freon in the system, AC still worked but the air was warm.
But you can damage compressor too if you continue to use your leaking AC. If you turn on AC with a hole in it for a long time, compressor oil will go away, and your compressor will suck in water inside.
