This has gotta be a typo. Look at May 2002 Motor Trend's Page 88 and 90. I'm surprised no one caught it there. They even have a picture showing the redline at around 8K on the Matrix.

I saw that, too. The 9000rpm redline thing is definitely a typo. That pic, although it's kinda small, does indeed show redline at about 8000rpm.

The Matrix seems like a much sweeter deal than the Celica GTS. 19K MSRP with Std. ABS, 16" wheels, and even a 115V outlet. One of the reasons I sold my GTS was because it was too small inside too.

It seems a perfect fit for you then. I hope Toyota sell Matrixes (Matrices?) by the boatload. If you get one, let us know. Good luck!

Well, stepping backwards, I bought both a used 1988 Integra LS-SE and an extremely rare USDM 93 Subaru Legacy Turbo Sedan and left with quite a bit of money after the sale of my GTS. Both cars are very nice, both are quieter than the GTS too. The Integra is built to last and it shows no sign of weakness and requires no repair after 14 yrs; The Legacy is a nice car but it has some minor problems like window leak and sunroof leak. The Legacy, which was sold from 90-94, share a lot of parts with the USDM WRX today---drivetrain, clutch, misc engine parts, etc..... It even has twin piston front caliper and 4 wheel vented disc brake and auto-up window. The Legacy Turbo is a SOHC design unlike the JDM 4-cam Legacy, it's turbo is for low rpm use and the car does make nice BOV and spooling noise. I would consider the Matrix when I have decided to sell both of my cars.

My friend owns a new XRS... the redline is 8200 rpm.

did they change anything in the 2ZZ to allow such a high redline? Hmmm, I wonder what the fuel cut is at.

My guess would be that the fuel cut-off would remain at 8300, like the original GTS's.

Nope. Nothing needs to be done. The 2zz was ALWAYS MEANT to have a 8200-8300 rpm redline. Toyota simply cut its balls off with that low rev-limit.

When I had my GTS I bounced off the rev limiter at around 8300rpm. It sounded like what you do on Gran Turismo 3.

I've already seen more Matrices driving around than Celicas and RSXs combined. Haven't seen any Vibes though.

Sorry but the "Redline" on a GT-S is 7,800 & XRS 7,600. Yes the rev limiter/fuel cut may be higher BUT the engine stops making horsepower at the redline. SO when you rev past the redline you are actually losing power and if you don't believe me just look at the dyno charts. CLICK HERE (http://www.newcelica.org/other/dyno/index.htm)

I could have sworn the XRS's redline was 8200 rpm, at least going from all the pictures I have seen. I know it's not 7600 rpm like you say it is

I have personally looked at a tachometer on a Matrix XRS, and can confirm that the red starts past 8000. Also, the dynos for stock GT-S's show that the power is pretty flat even past redline, until the rev limiter cuts out. True, the torque is decreasing, but the power is still strong right up to the limiter.

No the 2ZZ makes plenty of HP past redline. That why we've shifted past redline for a long time now. The rev limiter is well past it. and the Matrix shows that the same motor and trans can handle 8200 rpm shifts.

I Drove the Matrix for fun and the redline is at 8200 and the fuel cutoff is 8300.
