i found a 2000 gts and am going to go look at it soon. it has 30k miles on it. i was just wondering what i should make sure to check out on the car, and what is known to go on these cars. also, on this forum i saw something about lift bolts. what are the lift bolts, where are they located, and why are they important? any other advice people cangive will be much appreciated. thanx

30,000 is very low mileage for a 2000

Take a look in the engine bay. See if it looks like anything has been "gerry rigged", i.e., splice here, cut there, etc. Look at the battery terminals, generally a good indication if the guy kept up on maintenance if he didn't take it to a dealer. get under the car, look for oil leaking, etc. Other than that, ask about the belt tensioner, and lift bolt (but I believe the bolt is inside the head, correct me if I'm wrong here). You'll be able to hear if the tensioner is going bad, trust me.

30,000 miles over 6 years...thats 5,000 a year, or about 13 miles per day. I only did this math because I wanted to see what it was averaging. If he were in fact driving 13 mpd, that would be bad, because the car is run daily. However, I only wonder if sitting for long periods of time without running could cause just general deteroration? I'm just thinking the fluids sitting (separation), tires in contact w/ the ground in one location, miscellaneous animals perhaps moving in, etc. I consider "low" mileage in comparison w/ my mother; she drives to/from work 5-6 times per week, but the roundtrip is only 12 miles. All the stores she shops at are along this drive, and she doesn't venture out anywhere else because shes afraid of getting lost.

that's bs. My M3 is a 95, with 70k miles on it. The car runs fine.

It was a question, not a statement of fact. (you guys are so quick to jump on people when you dont agree). You take care of your car. Apparently, it is not your daily driver, however, I would assume you at least look at it once a week. This guy sounds like he bought the car with the intention of using it, ends up not, and is trying to off load it so he doesn't have to continue paying for something he isnt using. Depending on how it is "stored" many things could fail just due to lack of use, and this is what I suggest he check. Checking liftbolts (is it a GTS?) or the belts isn't really relavant in this car because it doesn't have enough road time for these problems to develop. If he wants to check these thing as well, more power to him; I was just thinking of things I know people have had problems w/ when a vehicle sits for a long time. (hell, the battery in my moms jeep dies because she doesn't drive it but twice a month).

well, i'll be honest. I didn't read your whole post. I saw the beginning, the assumption that it might/would be crap because it had so few miles on it. battery, I'd check. The only other stuff that would go wrong, you can't check without a complete engine tear down. And this is all dependent on whether the car just sat for 3 years or not. (I'm talking valves/gaskets drying up, etc.).

Yea I had a 94 Corolla that sat for a year. Threw a new battery and oil change in it and it started up fine and has been running fine ever since.
