I have the Cobra 9550 right now. I bought it at work at Sears. We just got our newest radar detectors by Whistler. We have the DE1670LD in the store for $150, but I can order the DE1790 for $300. Does anyone have any experience between the two or with Whistler in general? How good are these detectors? Much thanks.

I used to have a Whistler, it sucks because when I passed by a cop on his motorcycle, it didn't even detect his radar gun that's why I trade it in for a cobra. Have you seen the new cobra's, the one with that small antenna??? I heard those are so far good, it has that weather alert thingy.

That's weird. I've just been getting a lot of false alarms with my Cobra. I know which Cobra you're talking about. It picks up weather alerts. We had those but we stopped carrying it. I've heard better things about the Whistler than the Cobra actually. Anyone else have anything on this?

go with the bel 980, it will be the only radar detector you will ever need. it is upgradable so you never have to by a new one, unless some sh!t steals it.
it is expensive though

Actually I the Cobra with the weather alert and it is a great radar detector. No false alarms, my friend however had an older model Cobra and he used to get false VG2 alerts a lot, I think they have fixed it now. I have owned both whistler and Bel as well, everyone told me Bel was the best but mine ended up back at Circuit City, piece of junk, as for the Whistler I think it was better than Bel but not as good as Cobra. Hope this helps since I have owned all 3 brands and have some experience with them.

My friends and I went up to mammoth last weekend for snowboarding and the Valentine 1 radar must have saved our asses at least 4 times. From my experience w/ radars I would have to say that this was best radar detector I've ever seen. It had very few false alarms and was on the dot every time there was a cop nearby. I highly recommend this radar detector.

I would go with the passport 8500, or the Bell 980. I have the Passport 8500, and it saved me a huge ticket this weekend on the way to Austin. It went full alert on KA band, so I quickly slowed to 75, and waited a good half minute before I saw the cop going the other way. I was impressed and happy. Oh, I made it to Austin in an hour and a half from Houston! :)
