Can someone explain to me wheel offset.
I dont understand when people ask whether a 35mm or 45mm offset will fit on our cars instead of the factory offset. What does this mean?
Thanks and sorry if its a really stupid question.

Offset is the distance between the centerline of the wheel and the mounting surface of the wheel. Positive (like ours) means that the mounting surface is on the "outside" side of the centerline.
People ask because changing offset changes the position of the wheel...lower means the wheel is pushed out wider...higher, it moves inboard. Change offset too much coupled with a big increase in width and/or a lowered car and you can get rubbing on one side or the other.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread....
n00b question.
Can you change the offset on a wheel?
[i.e. I found a wheel that is set for +43 can you change it to +36?]

no you cannot change the offset of a wheel! and 43mm should work just fine on the celica! or if you want it to stick out further then you can get a wheel spacer like 5mm then you would theoratically be at 38mm:)
hope this helps
