Why do drivers of these two generally hate each others' cars, to such an extent that they even dislike each other just because of the cars?

it's just a rivalry. nothing serious. just like ford vs. chevy, bears vs. packers, tar heels vs. blue devils. it's for fun. but, like anything, somebody will take it too far. i've owned both and liked both. both companies make good cars. but i don't think the talking between the camps is anything more than that. at least, it shouldn't be. we have more important things to be worried about and fighting for. this stuff honda vs. toyota (and vs. scoobie and eclipse and se-r spec v, et al) should be an entertaining distraction, nothing more.

I have a mutal respect, I've been on both sides of the fence. 96 Acura was my 3rd car (R.I.Pieces). Love my Celica though. I think it's all about hype & ego IMHO.

I've owned both, and I like them both for different reasons.
Honda: good, inexpensive aftermarket; white on a honda looks clean;
Toyota: less of the same cars around, uniqueness;
thats all i can think of right now =P

because hondas epitomize everything that's wrong with the world and toyotas symbolize everything that's good. :D ;)

What I observe is that this kind of attitude mostly exists in the USA. In Asia, people with Honda and Toyota would rival each other in a street race or racetrack, rather than talking trash or comparing .5 sec of a quartile mile time to prove who's faster.

well i've own'd 3 honda's, 1 nissan, and now a toyota so i have seen many sides of the import scene. honda's arent bad, its just some of the drivers making the honda's look bad. but that can be said for almost any car/company.

I have respect for Hondas, but you can't deny the fact: Honda is preferred brand for riceboys.

I don't like Riceboy Hondas. The ones w/ huge double whale-tails, dog-fart mufflers, and overdone graphics. Around my neck of the woods, Hondas are the most ricey vehicles.
I had a del sol, just a regular Si... wanted an Integra. I read an article about the Celica GTS vs. the Type R and decided the Celica would be a very capable contender. After the first week of owning it, I've liked it more and more.
I think anyone who is willing to make their car perform gets respect in my books. I can't stand all show-no go. Around here, it seems there are 1 in 10 Hondas/Acura that are actually fast. Everybody else is just being a poser.

not all honda's are rice boy cars... its generally da POS car.... excuse me, I mean da Civic. What I dont understand is if ur gonna get a civic and rice it out, why they dont pay that extra 3 g's and get da EX with da vtec. for some reason they all have da LX.
But other then that, I think what ur looking for determines which brand is better.
ex.
Toyota MR2Spyder vs. Honda S2000, da S2000 is better.
Toyota Rav4 vs. 1st Gen. Honda CR-V, da Rav4 is better.

That is what makes the automotive hobby fun, everyone has their own idea about what makes their ride unique. I don't really understand why anyone would get upset simply because someone decides to go for looks over performance? There are many aspects of the current custom scene that I don't "get", neons, sound systems etc. But it is your car and money so do whatever makes you happy.
I personally lean toward the performance aspect myself. If and when I do anything further to the car it will be for speed. While not really doing anything for the performance I had to change the springs, couldn't stand the look without them.

w/ the all show no go... i meant the guys who go out of their way to make their car look or sound fast. The biggest annoyance has to be the huge over-sized muffler tips. Or having 15 billion gauges for a civic EX.
The other day... I saw a black civic pull up on the highway. He had a huge APR wing, covered the car in decals, had an upside down Acura badge on the back, and a type "r" sticker on the side and an SiR badge on the back... oh yeah, and a bunch of gauges on the inside.
Whatever HP gains he had from the badge, he lost with the wing on the back :D

hehe.... why do pepsi and coca cola have a rivalry? sprite and 7-up? nike vs adidas? cuz they cater to the same target audience...
honda and toyota are both relatively inexpensive, safe, and economy-minded cars.... they target the same people... so that's a reason of a rivalry.....
as for people hating each other.... they just prejudiced... doesnt make any sense.... if a nice, hot girl drove a civic, i'd go out with her... why not?

The only two Hondas I'd ever own are the Type R I have and an NSX to come. (I don't fit in the S2000) I prefer Toyotas.
