synthetic is king in the oil world because crude our of the ground has different size molecules and even the best crude isnt refined to near the brakdown specs of synthetic.it also has been finally proven to make an extra couple horsepower . i run mobil 1 0w30 or 5w30 , but royal purple is an excellent choice too .price is high but worth it .dont believe u can run it an extra 3k miles or more it still gets dirty , but just doesnt brak down and flows better in the high revving celica.... good luck

so what's the recommended change interval for syn? I was thinking 5K, but sounds like alot of people still change at 3K even with syn.

here's a decent discussion of syn vs. conv:

Hello.

Change it when you owner's manual says to. This change your oil every other day thing is just to a scam to make money for oil companies and auto shops. I have never owned a car that required a 3 month 3K oil change. I'd say only about 5% of street legal vehicles require 3K or earlier oil changes. The 3 cars I own right now call for an oil change every 12 months or 7,500 miles. Which ever comes first. I change it every 6 months or 4,000. My girlfriend's 00 Celica GTS calls for an oil change every 5,000 miles. She changes it every 5K or 6 months and uses Moble 1 oil.

i had conventional 5w30 (castrol) in there. i changed the oil after about 2400 miles. it was pretty bad looking. the new royal purple (5w30 synthetic) looked almost completely different.

whenever i change at 3-3.5k miles from synthetic, the old synthetic oil looks noticeably dirtier than new synthetic oil. still a lot cleaner than conventional stuff.

I do mine a 5k just like the factory suggests doing, but I'd do 3k if I was using convential instead of synthetic.
