Helpp... I was driving my gts today to PepBoys to get my tires balanced and rotated... and 1 mile from getting there on 41114 miles my check engine light came on.... Why is this?

here is a little history on my car

i got it in the beginning of 2000, 2nd day i had it i put a custom exhaust on it, 3rd day i got the RMM intake and put that on it ... so with less than 200 miles i already had exhaust and intake.

about 6500 miles my car got stolen... got it back the next day with 250 more miles on it... that day sucked....

2 days later found out that my transmission was fuged, had get a replacement under warranty...

37 days!!!! later... got my car back with a new tranny that was shipped by BOAT from japan... Hell, toyata even gave me a new clutch ... this day was cool...

18000 miles... got my very first speeding ticket, going 135mph... dont worry... when i went to court the judge was very very nice and only gave me a ticket for 85 in a 55... still was $560 and 5 points.

19000 miles... (time to be a daddy) had a baby girl, put my car back to stock with the exception of a butterfly being removed .....

36000 miles... had the main belt and tensioner replaced under warranty

19000 - 41114 miles pretty much babied the car ever since, and rarely ever go-into lift.

Today check engine light is on... i dont get it.. for the last 22000 miles i have drove my gts 4k rpms and under and i would be in 6th gear by the time i hit 50 or 60 mph....

and ideas guys??

Take it to the dealer (or someplace with a error code reader) so you can figure out where the problem is at least. From there you can at least make an informed decision as to what to do (you will at least have a clue as to where the problem is).

Toyota wants too much $100 just to diagnose it....

i know how to do it on my MR2 but is there a way i put my gts in diagnostic mode.. and does someone have a list of what the codes are?

Go to the dealer~ let them look at it first and if something is wrong internally.. you have 60,000 powertrain warranty!
Remember! Dealer is a private owned company so they might lie to you for their own benefit so don't let them fool you!
I don't think any dealer in US charges for Checkup so go do it as soon as possible.
Peace!

i was under the impression that my warranty was up at 36,000 miles.... i thought 60k cost more $$ and if it did i didnt pay for it...

PPTRacing (http://www.pptracing.com/) just released their ODBII interface, and software. You're own portable diagnostic kit... No more ridiculuosly expensive "Diagnostic Checks" from mechanics (which basically use the same thing) for CEL's.

easy, the car misses lift so its being mad at you.
reset it and drive it like it wants it and it should not come back on:)

yes
toyota wants $100 just to diagnose it
but if it's under warrentee, you don't have to pay the $100
i might be a "phantom light", which means nothign is wrong and the light just went on, most of the time caused by down shifting too fast and landing too high, well that's what toyota told me which sounds like BS pretty much, but i didn't need to pay the $100
