i dont think its that bad. i sometimes do it when im rolling up to a light.

Don't you have an auto? Yes it would be bad for an auto. that's what the 'park' gear is for.

as long as it is in neutral or the clutch is kicked down, then it's fine

its not bad as long as you dont do it while the car is in drive if its an auto. Shutting off the car in neutral is fine. Although when you do turn off a car thats automatic when it is in drive it does something called an automatic switch-over which disengages the gear and is pretty much like neutral. It does that b/c if the car were to stall at a high speed the tires wont lock up on you and cause you to lose control.
