View Full Version : Are HID's really worth the cash?

I gotta replace one of my headlamps. The OEM toyota bulb is about 50 bucks, and a good HID kit is ten times that price, wtf? The stock bulb seems pretty bright and clear and lasts a long time, I know HID's are brighter and probably last longer, but honestly, are they really worth paying ten times more??

Once you go HID, you'll never want to go back, ask any HID owner.

Ya, you think you couldnt see anything, go drive an srt-4 and try to see with those lights. Man i was cruisin down the highway beside my friends, and he had the high beams on....looked like my low beams were high compared to his. I turned my highs on and it lit up like daytime to his.

As long as you get non-ricer HIDs (6000K and under), they're very much worth it. I've got Nokia whites all around, including fogs, side markers, parking, turn signals, license plate lights. Looks awesome at a fraction of the HID $$...

Not even as bright as stock. My friend had them, and they were incredibly dim, and the beam pattern was horrible.

Why not just get a Sylvania Silverstar Bulb at autozone for like $15 or something compared to $50 for a stock bulb???

If you really want HID's for your high beams, then yes, you would have to buy a second set. Do you really need them, no. Even driving out through the country with no light pollution at all, there is no need for your high beams. I can hardly even tell that they are on with my HID's. And yes they are worth twice what you would pay for them.

I have to disagree with you on this one, they are definitely brighter than stock and I have had the same Phillips Cool Blue (low beam) and Sylvania Silverstars for 2 years+ so that statement cannot be true. I also know they are much brighter than stock because I compared them, left one stock and the other the new bulbs and there is a hell of a lot of difference. On top of that if they were not brighter than stock then we could all sue them for false advertisement. These are not your crap Nokia, APC, or any other type bulbs, trust me.

Hi guys,

Now is a good time to introduce myself. I am becoming a sponsor here soon as well as an HID vendor. I am renowned in honda-tech, as well as half a dozen other online car forums.

Bottom line is, I sell the best aftermarket HID's you'll ever get your hands on with E13 European quality approval marking from Luxembourg, along with a no-questions-asked 1-year warranty.

All this for only $250 SHIPPPPPEDDD!!! Yeah, it sounds too good to be true, but for all the skeptics, take a few days until I get my official thread going on here with all the info and pictures you guys will need to get a good idea of how great our products really are. You get great customer service (we reply to e-mails faster than a heartbeat), as well as a product you can trust. All this for a fraction of the cost of most HID companies.

Got any questions, e-mail me at xenithxenons1@yahoo.com or shoot me a PM. No sales yet though, I want to become a vendor first before I take orders. Thanks, appreciate your time, peace out.

Best regards,
George

HID kits can come in almost any halogen bulb size. They just take D2R (reflector bulbs) or D2S (projector bulbs) and mold a plastic base onto them to fit whatever size is needed. HIDs in high beams are unnecessary, though, since you'll rarely need any high beams with HID lows, and HID fogs defeat their purpose (yellower light cuts through fog, white reflects it back).

Sylvania's site lists their H7 Silverstars' lumens output as EXACTLY the same as their regular clear bulbs. The difference you see is from the increased glare from the whiter color, which increases the contrast between brightly lit and dimly lit objects (not good). The glare is harder on the eyes, as well. Trust me, I've been researching bulbs for the last few years, which is why I won't buy any aftermarket halogens except maybe Philips Vision Plus or Osram SilverStars (brighter than Sylvania's), which have been proven to be brighter than normal bulbs.

I'd suggest to those thinking about going to HID to screw all those kits out there. Do it the right way or do not do it at all.

Right way:
Take an OEM ballast (Hella or Osram) and use an OEM D2S bulb (Philips 4300K)
Retrofit this with an HID projector.
Use a wiring harness (costs about 50 bucks) most of the cheap kits don't have them
and when your wires fry in a yr or so you'll be crying.

I know this can be expensive, an alternative is to get the OEM ballasts and OEM bulbs and place them in the stock projectors. They work very well. I just finished this conversion as a matter of fact. Celica Stock projectors are some of the best out there, I have a nice cutt off line, not much glare, could use a little more color at the cutt off though.

Just get some Osram (Smaller) or Hella Gen 3 Ballasts and D2S bulbs, D2S to H7 adapters (20 bucks) and you are good. I think the blue tinted kits are crap. then if you want to get real HID projectors in the future, you can still use your existing D2S setup.

They use Philips/Hella components and have a fused wiring harness that draws power directly from the battery. HIDPlanet also sells full conversions with projectors:

Yes you are right, but not too far back they were selling that kit for 450 bucks. They have now lowered it to 380. But you can still do this for much cheaper if you know what you need. Besides, it's annoying to get the kits because if your bulbs ever blow you'll need to buy bulbs that are rebased (125 per bulb) whereas you can buy OEM D2S bulbs for 75 dollars a pair.
