I used paints for plastics. Forgot what brand, but it's the brand that is really popular with plastics (Duplicolor???).
As long as you sand the piece and clean it well before spraying, it should adhere properly. I used a primer under the base coat, but it isn't necessary. I also didn't clear mine (didn't want it to glare too much) and over a year later there are no visible scratches and no chips or flaking.
I also sprayed around 3 or 4 base coats and sanded the first coat before applying the top coats.
Anyways, just make sure you properly clean and sand the surface before spraying anything.

What kind of sand paper is best to use. Im totally new to doing all this, but a friend was giving me all kinds of ideas to make the car a lil more custom, so I wanna take a shot at this. I just hope the paint comes in a nice purple, not dark

Well don't quote me on any of this, but when first sanding the plastic console, use around a 400-600 grit piece of sand paper and wet sand the plastic. Sanding will allow the paint or primer a scuffed surface to adhere to. Wet sand until the piece is smooth to the touch. After sanding, make sure to wash the piece with soap and warm water very well. You can also use a tack cloth to pick up dust and such before spraying, but you don't have to. Then you can spray the primer on. The primer will promote adhesion and help to cover any imperfections in the plastic.
You can skip the primer and go to the base coat if you want, it's up to you. Or if the plastic console is in good condition, then you can just use an adhesion promoter. You don't really have to though.
If you use primer or adhesion promoter, then after spraying it on, sand it with 400-600 grit sand paper to make it smooth. Make sure it is very dry before doing so (should tell you how long to wait on the can). You must make sure there are no imperfections at this point or they will show up even more when you spray the color coats. If you accidentally sand through to the plastic underneath, spray another coat of primer and repeat the process. Then wash clean with warm water and soap.
Then spray your base coats. I'd spray at least a few of them and let each one dry at least 10-15 minutes until dry to the touch before spraying another one. If you spray one area too much or don't allow the paint underneath enough time to dry, the paint could run. Just spray evenly and don't hover in one area too long. If you miss a small area then get it with the next coat, don't just target that one area.
Then after all of that's done, you can clear it if you want. Depends on if you want it glossy or not.

It's actually really really easy to do. And the best thing is that if you make a mistake, it's completely reversable since all you have to do is sand the mistake and spray again.

I'm about to paint my center console and around the speedometer myself. I bought some duplicolor self etching primer, some cherry red paint, and some crystal clear coat. From my understanding the plastics need to be sanded down first? What about the black plastic speedometer? That's already rough as it is.do I need to sand that or can I start straight up with the primer? And will 600 grit be ok?
