View Full Version : looking for new subs

Ok. My sig shows what I already have. I'm looking to upgrade the 10" Boston Comp's for some 12's that can actually take advantage of the power I push with the Alpine MRV-1507.
Here are the exact stats for the 1507:
MAX POWER (EIAJ) 450W x 2 (4 Ohm Stereo) 1500 x 1 (Bridged 4 Ohm)
Continuous Power (Watt) (at 14.4V 20-20kHz):
4 Ohm Stereo (0.08% THD) 25W x 2; 2 Ohm Stereo (0.3% THD) 450W x 2; Bridged 4 Ohm (0.3% THD) 900W x1
Right now I have the subs wired at 2 ohm stereo and I can easily distort them. I want some subs that are loud, can handle all this power but still produce really CLEAN bass. High SQ + high SPL is my goal. I have been told that you can bridge the 1507 down to 2 ohm so it pumps out 3000W x 1 and remains stable.
Suggestions?

Hmm, what about the Image Dynamics ID MAX12's? I could wire them so I got a 2 ohm bridged load, then I would have 900x2 RMS power. That should be good. How is the SQ on these? Also, how the hell would I mount these things? I have my amps on the back of the rear seats.

My friend has those and they sound fookin unbelievable. It produces a very clean hit with no distortion at high volumes. I was going to get those at first until I heard the Kicker L7s, which I personally prefer, since they bump harder than anything I've ever heard so far.

If I'm sending 900watts RMS to each speaker, am I going to have to worry about cracking my rear window? I can already shake the hell out of it sending 450 RMS to each of my 10's....

I doubt it. Doubling your wattage isn't doubling your volume.

i know this. I thought doubling power = +3db. However, arent these monsters going to push a lot more air?

Your right. The benefit of doubling power is you'll have less distortion and only a slight change (+3db) in volume. 12s will be able to push more air around but i don't think it will be enough to cause the glass to crack.

IDMAX :)
Doesnt it take 4x the power to double your volume?

dB SPL laws
rule (gain)
double amplifier wattage (+3 dB)
double number of speakers (+3 dB)
double distance from sound source (-6 dB)
halve distance from sound source (+6 dB)
double driver excursion (+6 dB) (note: equiv to doubling wattage and # of speakers)
drop down an octave (-12 dB) (due to increased excursion requirements)
put speaker on the floor (+3 dB) half loading
put speaker floor, against a wall (+6 dB) quarter loading
put speaker floor, wall, in corner (+9 dB) eighth loading

also note:
a 10dB increase in SPL = an apparent doubling of loudness
1W of acoustic power = 112 dB SPL 1m
and you need 10x power to double the volume

ttt, and maybe someone ought to post these dB SPL laws somewhere so people can reference them.

Man...if I were you I would straight up get 2 12"in Kicker L7s. Basically 1 of these suckers will rape 2 12"in JL W3s with no effort and their sound quality is superb. Actually, 1 10"in L7 will rape the W3s too prob.

all you need is one 10" or 12" JL Audio W7 and you'll be set to go....

I guess I need to listen to the W7's, the kickers, and the IDMAX's before I can make a decision.

W7's kick ass but they're like freakin 6 bills for a 12"in!! Way outa the ballpark for me. If you can afford it go for it.

You should got with 1 15" memphis LVS.with 1 speaker and the rite amp's you will be in the 156Db range.

There are a couple of questions here:
First, what kind of price are you looking at? Second, are you planning on entering any contests, SPL drags etc?
The first question is basically to gauge where you're at in terms of $$$. If price is no option I would say to check into the Eclipse Titanium subs. These subs really kick a$$, good clean deep sounding bass. If price is more of a factor - which it is for many of us I would suggest the Alpine Type-R subs....the 1507 is a great amp (I have it pushing for Type-R 12s right now)
If you're looking to enter contents, db challenges, or SPL drags where the major entry classes are based solely on cone size I would recommend the W7s. I've heard these in person - an Audi with two W7s (each powered by its own 1507). The W7 is an extremely nice sub (negatives here would include major air space requirements and high cost). The cost doesn't break down...here in Hawaii it would cost over 7 bills to get a W7 (which is more than I would pay to get two Titanium or three Type-R subs.)
