Hey guys,
Need some help concerning my first gear. All 2k2 GT-S 6spd Celi owners... does anyone have a hard time downshifting in first gear when going more than say 7mph? the reason why i ask is that every other gear is fine for downshifting, but with first, it's rather difficult to put the stick in first gear position when going over 7mph, but when idle or under 5-7mph is easy. I don't like forcing anything, it should just go into place, no? or is there a trick to it? 00-01 please reply also... need to know if i should get this checked, the car's only 2months old. or am i just not used to a 6spd enough? ;p this is probably a dumb question but any info is appreciated, thnx all

Sometimes i have that problem..so i just rev the engine first then it seems to go in easier..not sure if that helps or not....

Everyone will have that problem. You're not really supposed to shift into 1st again once you start moving. You need to double clutch to get it to go into 1st (you should be doing this with every gear when you downshift).

its because of the gear ratio and the synchros on the gear... if you do it correctly you should apply a little pressure to 1st and as soon as the synchros accept this pressure they'll mesh the the shifter into 1st...

WELL WHAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT IS DONT PUT IT INTO FIRST..IF YOU KEEP SHOVING IT IN..THEN IT WILL EVENTUALLY MESS UP..JUST PUT IT INTO SECOND..YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO DOWNSHIFT TO FIRST ANYWAYS..

You shouldn't have to double clutch. Thats what synchros are for.

Eventually, your synchros will wear out. That's what happened to my first transmission. Nobody ever taught me about double clutching, and my synchros started to wear, eventually causing my gears to grind. I've gone 3x as many miles on my new tranny with double clutching, and have had no problems with grinding.

true so true yeah supposadly first gear is only for starting the car moving and thats it but i cant get in to first gear unless i'm doing less than 5mph and then i can go in to the gear not letting go of the clutch i dont know why but it does that

1. Push in clutch
2. Shift into neutral
3. Release clutch
4. Rev engine to appropriate speed for lower gear
5. Push in clutch
6. Shift into lower gear
7. Release clutch

If done correctly, there will be no resistance from the shifter when you're downshifting. It will also stop the jerkyness that may occur if you just put the shifter straight into the lower gear and release the clutch.

It may seem like a lot to do, but it will become second nature in time.

i thought u were suppose to downshift into first when going 15 mph or less right? if not then what u do put it in 2nd? but then wouldnt it come off the line slower?

You should never have to downshift to 1st doing more than 5mph... if you do you're gonna get whip lash 9 times outta 10... 1st gear is set so that your car can get goin from a standing start easily... It's basically all torque to break the inertia of a standing car... You should not have to double clutch on every down shift... That was for old old old transmissions that didn't have synchros... If you shift properly, your trany should last 100,000 miles easily on that car...(and that's pesimistic) You can double clutch into first if you want, but why? If you're coasting to a near stop just shift down to 2nd as long as you're above 3 or 4mph it'll go fine... u can always give it a touch extra gas, just be careful of ridin the clutch when you do it...

sigh....

most to all cars won't let u downshift to 1st. u need to double clutch, then it'll let u in .. and no it doesn't harm it if u double clutch it. Just practice. And it doesn't take any time after it becomes 2nd nature.. i "DC" all my shifts.. i can shift into any gear i choose.. as long as i'm not going faster than the target gears max speed.

and i realized that couple months back. cuz i was trying some new shifting technique that wasn't "DC" and i notice i kept wanting to "DC" funny huh??
