A cheap radar detector is useless. Invest some money in a real radar detector if you want to save yourself from tickets. The cheap models have poor sensitivity and too many false alarms, which means you'll learn to ignore them shortly after you buy it. The only radar detectors worthy of owning are, in this order...
1. Escort Passport 8500 ($300)
2. Bel 980 ($300 I believe)
3. Valentine 1 ($400)
4. Bel 880 ($150) Actually better than the later 890 model.
5. Whistler 1780 ($200)
Number 1 and 2 are pretty much a tie in all categories. The Valentine 1 isn't quite as good on sensitivity or features, but does offer the directional arrows which the owners of them swear by.
I own a Passport 8500 and it rocks. Between work and home (18 miles) I only get one false alarm. If I get an alert anywhere else it always a cop on the side of the road, either in a speed trap or with someone already pulled over.
For more, go to http://www.radartest.com.
Lastly, if you're not sure, buy any model you want and one of the top three above from a store that you can return them to. Drive around with both of them in the car and see which one works better. I have never seen a radar detector under $200 work as well as my 8500. Also, I've personally owned or borrowed a Whistler 16xx, a Cobra, and a Uniden. They all sucked and had way too many false alarms.

Cheap radars are no good. I had a cobra and got rid of it seeing that it didnt work until i came within 20 feet of a cop....I learned my lesson and bought a Phantom II (400 bucks)....It is about 4 months old and I'm willing to sell for 300. I'm selling because I am getting a Supra Twin Turbo and I'm gonna have a radar built in my dash. Email me at i3oca@aol.com if you are interested in buying.

I have a Bel 980, and it has paid itself off numerous times.. I bought it from www.thecameraclub.com for about $215 ($330 retail)... it was well worth it.

street price on BEL 970 is ~ $200. Escort 8500 $300. Valentine1 $400.
using a radar detector does not equal safety or no tickets. it all depends how you use it and what equipment the police in the area use and how their equipment.

hey, like it has been said, getting a detector is not a license to go balls to the wall. It is only a tool to help you find the cops. And another thing that I see all too often, is where people mount the detector. Remember highschool science people. That thing called "Line of Sight"??? The higher up you get your detector mounted, the longer the range will be. If you have it sitting right on your dash, it won't be as effective. My V1 is mounted right below the Blue strip at the top of the windsheild, with the remote display in a little pocket in front of the stick. And if you hardwire it in, you don't have the big cord coming down giving it away to cops.

I got my Bel 985 monday, but because my Celi was in the shop for a MAFS problem, I was unable to test it out.. Finally got my car back today and have been driving around seeing how it responds. Doesn't seem to be prone to phantom chirps, I'm pretty happy with it... Can't wait for my next trip, hopefully A little carshow in Atlanta in August... WOOP!

Radars are a waste of money, I was doing 90 MPH in New Jersey and the freaking thing went off as I was passing the State Trooper on the side of the road. I later found out, that most cops keep their radar guns off until the car is passing by them, at which point your radar will go off, but it's toooo late... BUSTED!!!

Yea well radars arent supposed to be the miracle device to keep you from getting tickets, they are supposed to forewarn you if there is a cop ahead with their radar on, in case you are going over the speed limit by a little, not 20+ mph.
