Too heavy, too big for engine bay, poorer (is that even a word) milage?

i think the question is more like, why shouldn't Toyota go with a 2.0L engine instead? 2.2L is too big for our engine space

Imagine a 2.0L version of the 2zzge :)

Well they squeezed 200hp out of 1.8L in the TRD Sports M. Some claim the actual HP on that car is much higher (210hp), although we'll never know unless someone here in the US dynos it. But ultimately, if Toyota didn't discontinue the car, they would have come up with a 2.0L engine, perhaps with 210hp to start to compete with the RSX-TypeS. But yeah, we can only DREAM what could have been.

Got point! Cause I was looking at the TC's engine bay and it doesn't look all that big at all:

^And that's with the optional Supercharger bolted on. Hmm, maybe its the weight issue, cause I know the 2ZZGE is super light.

they already tried 2.2 litre celerys
they were ghey
i like the 1.8 cuz it gets 33mpg on the highway...ill trade the torque for mpg

I think it's because to register a 1.8L engine car in Asia (like HK) is cheaper than a 2.0L car. Registration cost go by engine size.

IMHO Toyota were fools to produce a new gen with less torque and HP than the ST205 the purpose of a newer gen is to better the old one. Obviously some twat forgot about the engine size and performance. Personally I think that the gen 7 should have a 2.5L powerplant 250 / 300 + bhp and 4WD. But Toyota obviously looked at the other cars that they produce and thought 1.8 have it across the range. barstewards. Don't get me wrong I do like the 1.8 alloy engine and the gen 7 celica but am pissed off that every other fecking model now shares the same engine.

the SPORTS M is a GTS with TRD Exhaust stock and a few other goodies.
As far as not fitting the engine bay. Umm, If Toyota would have wanted a 2.2L engine they would have amade a car that would fit a 2.2L. It's not like they made the car and said, "damn, we cant fit the 2.2L we originally decided in there so we need a smaller one".

Its all about sales, having a spread range of the 1.8 VVTI or VVTLi engine from a sales point of view is good just limit the ECU on some models and erm you got the CITY - small hatch - coupee varients.
THe Sports M had the TRD high compression pistons as well 13:1 / header / exhaust etc

There is...it's called the 3ZZ-GE. On the engine dyno, mine output 1998 cc's, or 1.998 litres.

The TRD Sports M has the exact same engine as a standard GT-S does. The differences being the ECU programming, free'er flowing exhaust, and air filter. The engine upgrade kit the article speaks of were performed on a TRD Sports M and a Will Vs. The Engine upgrade kit consists of the pistons, exhaust manifold, and flywheel. It never came with the 13:1 pistons, exhaust manifold, or flywheel installed from the factory.

The 7th gen is the fastest USDM Celica there has ever been (not to mention the best braking and probably the best handling). I'd call that an improvement. As for the rest of the world, Toyota stopped using the Celica in WRC, so they had no reason to build another GT4. :p:

i don't know that toyota would have been able to keep the celi in the price range that it is with all of that- what you just described sounds a lot like a wrx sti

A stock one. They were low 15s.
its problem was its weight. Even for today's standards it was heavy for what it produced. Weight pretty close a JZA80 supra.
And as for the "3ZZ" it does not exist... in Toyota's eyes that is.

The 3ZZ-FE exists in the U.K. from Toyota. As for the Trial 3ZZ-GE....when Trial offered the design to Toyota, they were quite open to producing it since that is it's technically correct name (GE cylindre head), but declined since the Celica was already on its way out the door. Toyota in Japan was impressed though.
