God do I ever hate n00b status, but whatever. Have to start somewhere...

I gotta know if anyone else has encounter the same problem as I have in "old car syndrome."

I'm at the point now that I can replicate my check engine light coming on. Freeway speeds for 30 minutes, then it'll go away within 7 starts. Code reader comes with "catalytic converter efficiency" and to have a nice day. I crossed 100k yesterday (it's sad to think after driving it off the lot with a lonely 73 five years ago) and now feel that my starter is starting to go as well. Yes, it's old and things are obviously going to need to be replaced...

but...my question...anyone else experience an issue with the kitty converter? I'm wondering if it could just be an O2 sensor spazzing out and would only have to replace that instead of the whole thing and save myself some money.

Whatever input any of you guys have is appreciated. Even the "never heard of it, you smoke crack" ones.

Welcome. Haven't heard about many failing catalytic converters or 02 sensors. What type of aftermarket parts do you have? CAI?

Thanks for the welcome...

As for mods and aftermarket stuff...I now have none. I use to have stuff up to about 60k but it was real basic and ultimately was just a bunch of things that lit up or made noise to see if I could blow up the alternator...but then the whole car got stolen instead of just broken into and I gave up on stuff. Now it's all back to stock. It's been to hell and back (not by me...by an ex) and I'm sure that's that problem right there.

Although you guys make me want to start working on it again. I got into sportbikes a couple years ago and that's been my new concentration of focus, but damn you guys have done some good work.

But no one's heard of my issue? That sucks...

I suppose it could be an 02 sensor but i really doubt it and i have never heard of the converter having issues either but i do have a question. Does it harm the way your car runs or does the light just come on and annoy you?

Well, after doing a lengthy drive again last night, I think I've halfway figured out what causes it.

First off, it actually feels like it's smoother when the light kicks on. That's what really gets to me. But I made a trip yesterday, this time I managed to go 90 miles before the light kicked on vs. the 30 or so I'm use to...again, only at highway speeds, I can go around town all day without an issue. But the first 80, I ran w/o the AC going. I noticed for the first time today, if I have that going and I'm above 70 mph, something's not going right in the engine compartment...I can't describe it, but through just the feel of the car, I can tell when the compressor kicks on and off. I've never been able to tell that before...but on my way back I threw the AC on and the light said Hi in less than 10 miles.

I've always had my AC running hot or cold (on defrost) cause for whatever reason, I've always had a moisture problem with the interior building up if I don't use the AC. And I live on the west coast with no humdidity.

You know, I have said to people that this car fell off the conveyor belt with it's luck (break ins, thefts, impounds - not by me, minor expensive accidents, stupid people driving it, etc.). It really should just get pushed off a cliff and put out of it's misery. ;) But I do love it. Just gotta get that road noise dampened real soon.
