Ok, so I've been getting a CEL for a few months now. It's been the same thing everytime, P0420. That means there is a Catalyst Efficiency problem. After speaking with someone I know who works on Toyotas, he told me to replace the first o2 sensor. I did that, and gas mileage was improved, but I'm still getting the code. The weird thing is the CEL will stay on for 3-4 days, but then it'll just turn itself off. Some time will go by and then it'll come on again.

So i'm leaning towards the idea that I need a new catalytic converter. The exhaust smells of rotten eggs when the car is running. Has anyone had to replace their cat converter? My car has ~71k miles on it. Where can I get a new converter? Should I splurge and get a high flow unit, or is it even worth it?

Catalytic Converter is covered under the FEDERAL EMISSIONS ACT, and is covered up to 80K miles, take it to your dealer. If they find that the CATS are bad, they'll replace them. If it's something else you get to pony up the money.

I know this cuz my Celica had the CATS replaced under this very warranty.

I thought the P0420 code was for excess marijuana-to-air ratio, that can often lead to burnouts and increased drag.

When my 01 GT had 60K miles, the cat and the O2 sensor both had to be replaced. The CEL would come on for a couple of days and then reset. The new cat and sensor solved the problem.

I had the cat replaced under warranty on my '00 GTS at around 45K miles. Haven't replaced the O2 sensors, but plan to.

The second one shouldve been replaced too. The ECU takes reading from both sensors to determine the cat's efficiency. If that doesnt solve the problem it's a bad converter. If your car is under 80k miles, it is covered under the emissoins warranty and the dealer will most likely repalce both o2 sensors and the mid pipe with a cat. But, if you want a little more performance and a different exhaust tone, you could replace it with a high flow cat (although the OEM cat is a high flow) but one with a 2.5" inlet and 2.5" outlet and upgrade your mid pipe to 2.5".
