Another thing you might want to consider is getting my v9 taillight kit in red tint vinyl.

Not difficult at all to paint. But I'll let others give their opinions.

Very easy and worth it if you don't like the orange. I did mine with the testors model paint, but just changed to a different brand and it looks exactly like the stock red area. Can't even tell its been painted. Wish I could remember what it is called (or even what the bottle looks like!)

Post pics when you're done. Are you covering the entire taillight, or just the amber part?

Ditto. My current plan is just to cover the amber part but we'll see once I get the vinyl in.

Yeah same here. I only plan on covering the amber part. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I don't see the reason some people want to cover the entire light, when all you're trying to get rid of is the amber part. My v9 Kit does just that...covers just the amber part of the taillight.

I haven't had any of those problems after close to a year, 110+ degree heat, -10 degree cold, rain, snow, hail, sun.......

Maybe it's the craftsmanship....hehe

First clean the surface real well, I used glass cleaner. How I did it was one light coat of the testors stuff (which I baught from a local Hobbie Store), then sprayed more each time it dried, I did about 3 coats untill I got the color I wanted, it was night time and I was doing this in my garage so I turned off the lights and put put a flash light inside it to see what color it would come out to see where there were lighter coats and sprayed where needed...

I got the vinyl yesterday. I tried installing it but didn't finish it so I'm gonna redo it today. If you only cover the amber part with the red vinyl from b0x, then it won't match because the vinyl is a lot darker. But it blinks red. For now I'm just gonna cover the amber part and then I'm probably gonna get more vinyl to cover the whole thing. Right now I don't feel like taking both the taillights off. Your gonna have to take them off if you want to cover the whole taillights and do a really good job. I'll post pics when I'm done.

hmm.. that sucks. I was hoping to just do the amber part. Oh well, it looks like I'll be taking the lights off now.

It will be good practice for when/if I get the TYC lights.

I just installed the red vinyl on the amber part of the taillights this morning. It looks really good even though it's a little darker red. It's not noticeable at all from far away. I had to take off the taillights in order to install it. Taking off and putting back on the plastic panels was a pain. I was going to cover the whole taillight but it was too much work so I just decided to cover the amber part. Overall I'm happy with the results. I'll take pictures later when I get home from school.

Covering the ambers is all you'll need to do imo. Covering the whole taillight is going to pretty much give you the same results as covering just the ambers, because of the 2 different colors your dealing with.

When you spray it, if you are not happy with the surface finish, have some denatured alcohol (get it from Home Depot) handy and you can wipe it right off with the alcohol and a rag while its still soft. The two big tricks are:

1. With the lens off the car and light shining through from the rear, it will never appear to match the red on the top. When you put it back on the car, it will match perfectly.

2. Since it will never appear to match, resist the temptation to keep spraying. You will quickly get a very pinky, opaque finish that will look like crap. You basically stop painiting when the shine of the light remains unchanged and you have an even coat of red paint with a smooth glassy surface.

From what I understand, they do blink red. I don't see how they could blink amber since the light is passing through red vinyl. Email me for your kits:).

Mine blinks red, I guess it just depends on how dark the red vinyl you're using. I'll take pictures of them blinking later. I'll also take pictures of them in the sunlight so you can see the difference. Later

I laready got some vinyl but I can't seem to figure out how to make the edges where it curves, clean... also those parts don't seem to stick very well.... any ideas?

RJAY
05-01-2002, 08:10 PM
I had the same problem with the edges. I took out the taillights in order to get smooth edges. It is a pain but it's the only way. Hope this helps.

Use a hairdryer to heat it up a bit. When you feel it start to heat up pull on it real slowly.. but not too much. If you stress one section too much it will tear. Then you're SOL. :P
