Well, it depends on what you want from the Car?? If you want the performance edge, I'd go w/ the Celica. I have a GT and can beat a GT Eclipse (Yes, with a good driver behind the wheel) I also like the look of the Celica better. And the gas mileage is better. Just my .02

If you're going for looks: Celica GT-S Action Package
If you're going for performance: Celica GT-S Action Package
If you're going for handling: Celica GT-S Action Package
If you're looking for a 6-Speed Manual: Celica GT-S Action Package

If you're looking for a V6: Eclipse
If you're looking for a portly car that nullifies the V6 advantage: Eclipse

I could go on and on...

Put a picture of the celica next to the picture of the eclipse. Then decide :)

The GT-S beats the eclipse in pretty much every catagory.. so if you still don't know, then pic the one you think looks the best.

Pick up MotorTrend, December Issue. It has a comparison between the RSX, Celica and Eclipse. It's the issue w/ the SUVs on the cover. I almost disregarded it as the wrong issue.

Personally, after sitting in the Eclipse, the interior felt cheap and utilitarian. The V-6 is going to be torquier which is good for daily driving. But there are plenty of Eclipses around...

it all boils down to what you want:
performance, looks, practicality, etc.

Ok, I need to step in here guys...

Please do not discredit the 3G so badly please. For your information we have members hitting 14.8's with I/E and one guy getting a best of 14.69 with I/E. Comparable to any Celi GT or GT-S (Yes, there are some lower GT-S times I know, but a 14.7 is not slow.)

Now the 3G bonuses - Low end torque of a V6, trust me, it is very noticable and will help to get the jump at the line. Much easier to get the performance out of, no need to keep the 3G in "lift" (Although I wish Mitsu would have put the FTO engine with MIVEC into the 3G, oh well). Much easier to launch as well. Very comforatble inside and I think it looks great (Personal opinion)

The bad parts? - Yes, it is on the heavy side, but with the increased torque and hp it makes up for it. Throw on an intake and exhaust and you are looking at 180+ hp/tq to the wheels. Throw on a DP and you should be 190+. Not bad at all. Handling, definitely not in the same class as the Celi, but throw on a cheap sway/bar, strut bar, and lowering springs and new rubber on the GT, and you will have a much much much much better handling car.

Justt needed to interject a little realism and say that the 3G is not a disgrace (The GT that is) and that with the toys coming out (Supercharger, turbos, DP, headers) this car is soon to be much more respected I hope.

Oh and as a side note, to the PhilyGT guy that said he could beat a 3G GT with a good driver with his GT...I am assuming the 3G is an automatic correct?

I think both cars are nice. It all really depends on what you are looking for. I personally think the Celica looks better and performance wise is far beyond the Eclipse. You can do a lot w/ both cars but I would choose the Celica.

Hold on a Celica Gt beating a Eclipse GT. I am calling BS.

Now back to what we are talking about. Now no Neweclispe, or newcelica you are going to hear to diffrent things. when it comes down to it they are both great cars just at diffrent things.

performance would be the Eclipse. Come on 200 Hp to 180 Hp. And we have more torque . Yes the Celica are fast. I have driven both the GT-S, and the Gt Celicas. And I have driven the GS and the Gt Eclipse. I did lots of test drives before i bought my car.

the Celica handles better. but the inside feels cheap to me. "My though"

When it came down to it I wanted a Bigger motor that you can do more with. I like the Celicas but I love my eclipse .

It is going to come down to what you want. don't let anyone tell you want to drive

good luck

Hey Twinkies, you should really go and testdrive both cars like 3g said, that should answer a lot of questions for you.

Here's some more of honest opions for you in case you want it. I pretty much have the same view as 3g does except for I ended up with a 6sp Celica GT-S. I would have to say that if you are looking for a manual (don't know if you stated this already, don't think so tho) then the Celica (GT-S) would be a little more difficult to drive because the powerband is small (compared to some other cars and the eclipse) and not as torquey. But if there are some open roads where you live it will also be a more fun car because you can open it up there and see how great it handles.

However if you are looking to get an automatic, then go for the eclipse I say. I've always liked the sportshifts where the control is on the handle as opposed to the steering wheel. The eclipse would be more powerfull and as most people say, the auto GT-S just plain sucks.

haha I love how you associate the 200hp with automatically being better performance. I guess some SUVs should be beating your pants off then, I'm almost positive the ford excursion has more than 200hp so it has better performance than your eclipse.

EDIT: Oh yea and dont forget those monsterous semi's with 600hp!

Nope but when you have more torque and more HP then it is likely you will get beat. Now I have seen a Celica GT-S do 14.5. We were running the same all day, with the same mods. The Celica are hard to drive due to not haveing any torque. And it is hard to stay in the power band.

UUMM I would like to see a SUV that could beat me. Hum weight has a lot to do with it, and how it is geared. Trucks are not geared like sports cars, and if that was the case you would be screwed when a SUV wanted to race you!!

I never once said I dislike the celica's I am just telling a diffrent side. Like I said go to Neweclipse and they will all say the eclipse are better at everything. I never said that. I am just saying try each car. Everyone like something diffrent that the next person.

2001 Eclipse GT Power and torque mean nothing if you don't take weight in account, motorcycles with 100hp will kick everybody's ass on this board without even trying.

And 180hp Celicas are faster than 200hp Eclipses. Not by much, but they are faster.

Alright, lemme step in again as your most senior 3G poster on the board...:D

Now ask anyone that knows both cars, and a manual 3G GT and manual GT-S is a dirvers race. Taking the best time I have seen for a stock GT-S at, well shoot, the 1/4 mile database is not working for me now. But the best for a 3G GT stock is a 14.9 I would venture to say that for the majority of people with manual GT-S without a lot or prior driving experience with sticks or this car would be hard pressed to get into the 14's stock.

As for once mods start...right now the GT-S has the best itmes for basicmods, but with the new toys coming out for the 3G, even with bolt-on's the GT should be able to dip to the low 14's is my guess. Go the FI route and, well, that road is untested as of yet, but with a bigger engine and more displacement, taht TT set-up from MPH unlimited would change the scence and opinion of the 3G for many people I hope.

Anyways, from the people that know me and have seen me around, not trying to get into a arguement here, just trying to set the playing field correctly. Both our communities are much the same in the eyes of many, disgraces to what is commonly known as sport compacts. I have grown to like the Celi more, but still love my 3G more. Just two different approaches to do the same thing pretty much.

guy posts on celica site about which car is better eclipse or celica. celica owners talk **** about anotehr car(not unusual). eclipse owners come out of woodwork to talk **** back and defend their cars.

rinse and repeat.

to the person who started this topic...go and TEST DRIVE the cars. i can spit out numbers all day long at you, but in the end its what YOU like. not every car is made for everyone! now stop this nonsense, please.

ANY car with money can be made fast..and right now the 3G does have a larger aftermarket than teh celica. but if you don't want that, and you want an AWESOME handling car, or the better looks...get the celica..

and on and on and on..
