I'm having a problem with my engine hitting lift. I've had it to 3 different dealerships and none of them will even attempt to fix it. I printed all of the information off of the forum I could find and gave it to the dealer. When they called California they said that they had heard of the problem and the first step was to re-shim the valves. The dealer explained that this was a preventative maintenance and that I would be charged $1500 for the total job. Even though my car has only 34600 miles on it. The dealer keeps saying that this is due to over revving the engine, which I explained that I had not done. They said that there was no way they could tell that I had miss-shifted. When I asked them what the computer had said and if it threw a miss-shift code they said that it wouldn't store that information. I asked them if they had checked the oil pressure, and they said that it wounld have anything to do with my problem. I'm getting some serious run around here for about three months. If anyone has had a similar problem and had it repaired under warranty if you wouldn't mind sending me some of your info so I could get this settled I would greatly appreciate it.

Heres what you do... first of all the computer isnt gonna record any of the data into its memory cause it didnt throw off a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) ... so you're ok...
next up... Your warranty is a LEGALLY BINDING DOCUMENT... dont forget that. IT EXPIRES AT 60,000 MILES (for this particular problem) or 60 months... whichever comes first.
The only way the dealer can LEGALLY break this contract is if he can prove that you committed one of the things that void your warranty... like aftermarket parts at that specific point. Proof of abuse of the car, etc.
Dont let them jerk you around... be nice ... be courteous, but when they start talking like that, tell them that what they're saying is that they're voiding your entire warranty, and the only way they can do that is in A COURT OF LAW. Tell them if they dont adhere to the contract that both of the parties signed then you'll be calling toyota corporate and getting a lawyer.... and if they dont adhere to the warranty guess what you're gonna do? exactly that!

The dealer told me that to re-shim the valves idicated abuse. I told them that if I need to have valve work done at 36000 and it wasn't covered under the manufacturers warranty that I would have to contact my lawyer. The dealer ship didn't seem to care at all.

call them up and tell them they're getting a letter for breach of contract from your lawyer... call your lawyer, pay him an hours fee.. and get a breach of contract letter... then have it sent to the dealership and to toyota corporate .. both using certified mail... and that WILL get them talking...

I dont even think you need to do the lawyer thing yet. Just call Toyota corporate and have them lay the smack down. It works.
