hey guys,

i have a code alarm remote start/alarm that i'm going to install on my gts 6spd. i'm not really concerned about the legality, however i was wondering if anyone knows where i can get a 'neutral safety switch.' if the car is left in gear accidentally and i start it remotely, the switch will kill the engine so that my car doesn't drive into something by itself.

circuitcity, best buy, and tweeter do not carry this product, and i was wondering if anyone either has one on their car or knows where i can buy one.

thanks

From what I have read, most on here that have MT remote start don't use one. It would probably have to be a home fab piece with lever microswitches that must be all open or no start. Any switch that is closed would prevent start. These would have to be somehow mounted to the shifter box... and be in contact with the shifter. They would also have to be of such length as to prevent any interference with shifting.

Possible, but not easily done.

Alarm manufacturer's have circumvented this by requiring you to "pre-set or pre-arm" the remote start capability. Meaning that you must go through a sequence of commands, before you remove the key, that tells the remote starter that, yes, you have put the shift in neutral & that it is OK to engage remote start when commanded. The downside to this is that it is an "active" feature... not "passive".... or in other words... it's not automatic, as compared to having neutral detection..... which means you have to do it every time you exit the vehicle & expect to be able to remote start it.

My friend has a toyota truck thats a m/t and he has a button that came with the truck as an opition when he got it, he just pushs that and then he dosen't have to push in the clutch, so maybe if you got that, you could hook it up to that, so it could work, I'll ask him some more about it tom, if you want.

^^ Yea my old tundra had that, its called Clutch Start Cancel. I'm sure if you just bypassed the switch and connected the two leads you can just turn the car on normally. But again like an m/t remote, I dont know who leaves their car in gear without the ebrake on. If the ebrakes on and you leave it in gear when you start it, it will just try to lurch and stall.

The clutch safety switch is usually wired to be bypassed automatically with a M/T remote start.

that's how my compustar alarm is. It works great and it's safe. Only thing that sucks is that if you open your car to get something out it overides the settings so it won't remote-start the next time, but it's all for safety.

nope, if you leave the car in gear with the handbrake up the car will lurch forward and keep lurching forward until the engine is running at a smooth idle(aka car is rolling). The reason being that remote starts are programmed to crank until the car starts, not just crank the starter once. I have remote start on my manual car, I thought long and hard about designing a neutral safety switch but it just wasn't easy to hook up the way our shifters are. You could install a turbo timer in your car, it'll run the engine a few seconds after you take out the key. This way you know u didn't leave it in gear when you took the key out.

^- thats another good idea becuase my remote start has a turbo timer feature in it.

a friend from work (roadshop mgr at circuitcity) says hes going to order one for his rsx type-s and is going to get the same piece for me too that will work in my car as well. he says its a part he's had experience with installing at his tecnical school (not sure about name) and that it will make a remote start legal on a m/t.

once we get this thing figured out i'll post what he did.

Service techs put it in gear without the E-brake on A LOT, which annoys the hell out of me, of course by that time I've paid....

I've thought about using an LED proximity switch on the shifter linkage to get a neutral switch for my remote start. hmmmm, maybe I need to start doing some 'electronic whisker' type projects for this and another to sense curbs and avoid scrapping my fender... anyone care to estimate how much that would be worth to them so I can figure out if it's worth it?

my friend had a good idea on how to design something like this. Basically you have a hole in the center of your shifter rod horizontally with a laser on one end and a sensor on the other. When the car is in neutral the laser will complete its path to the sensor and remote start will work normally. Leave the car in gear, it breaks the path of the laser and doesn't start.

that all seems simple, but the implementation is the PITA on this one. I have just opted to not have remote start on this vehicle because I haven't found a legal way to do it yet either.

Curb Feelers! It would be like the technology land rover uses on their reverse sensor.
