Cold air intake is a longer tube and has the filter inside the wheel well plastics. It receives colder air from outside the engine bay (hence the name). A short ram intake is a short pipe that takes in air from inside the engine bay (the filter is around the same place as the stock airbox is). It receives hotter air and therefore doesn't make as much power as a cold air intake. The short ram is safer though because it drastically reduces the chance that the intake will suck up a large volume of water causing hydrolock.
