View Full Version : MWR Celica GT-S turbo

Well, we got bored with our NA GT-S that we have used in the past to test different NA bolt-ons. 185whp gets old.
We built a custom system for it to have some fun and find the limits of the 2zz.
Specs:
MWR manifold and pipes
Garrett GT3071R turbo
Large MWR FMIC
GReddy Type RS BOV
MWR 460cc injectors
MWR 255lph fuel pump
Power FC
She's not completely tuned in yet but will be soon. The clutch started slipping and prevented us from turning up the boost. At 6.5-7psi the car is puting down 275whp. It's a nice flat power curve at higher RPMs and is still flat at 273whp at 8800rpm. This setup likes to rev.
I'll get some pics and dyno sheets posted soon. We'll also be turning the boost up as soon as it's got a clutch and LSD to match.
The car is already a blast- I'm looking forward to a few more psi... and by the way, so far the poor thing is still breathing through fully stock exhaust and cat.

How come your guys kit isn't losing power when it hits lift and the other turbo charged gt-s's are?

100% untouched, ~75k miles, even has its original lift bolts.

Next time it's on the dyno I'll do a pull with NA VVT and VVL tuning- the difference is pretty surprising. With proper VVT and VVL tuning it makes great power on the small cam (~230 I think?) and pulls smoothly to and through the changeover. It ends up looking pretty similar to an NA torque curve, just much higher.

No immediate plans but it can't be ruled out either. Every custom system we do brings them closer to perfection and having a turbo GTS in-house will give us the opportunity for more testing and allow us to push the limits.

Nice numbers on 7psi. Is the head completely stock? If your revving to 8800 rpm, I assume your running your valve springs and valves.

wow, that must feel awesome. what kind of tourqe numbers did you put down? and what psi do you plan to get to on stock motor?

Great numbers! It's all in the tuning! I have been thinking about swapping out turbos to the GT line and upgrading the fuel system and a PFC to top it off. My biggest problem is that I don't have anyone nearby that can dyno tune it.

By the way MWR....do you have any pics of your setup? I would be curios to see your setup. What would a "custom" kit like this cost?

Doh. I looked at the dyno graphs and I didn't get to do one with both cams. They're all small or large cam only. I'd have done one at the end of course but the clutch had other ideas.
Torque peaks for both cams are right about 195 ft-lb at the wheels, with a small valley between them.
A setup like this typically runs ~$6500 installed and tuned, depending on options. We're looking at a couple of options that may let us bring that down a bit. Even the $6500 isn't bad though, considering most complete turbo kits run $4k plus install plus tuning and don't come with a PFC.

What is the lag like or when does power come on with the selected turbo? Is power linear or hit hard? Nice work!

It's not the quickest spooling turbo in the world especially with the stock exhaust. If we intended to stick with the stock engine for ever we'd have chosen a smaller turbo. It does drive nicely and builds boost at a pretty reasonable engine speed.

No pics of the engine bay because it's nothing special. All you can see is a short length of pipe that is not powder coated yet.

I'm still surprised you never experimented tuning one of your "race motors" N/A to see what it could do. I would hope that for the price it would do more then 185 whp. any particular reason you didnt try that??? IMO breaking 200 whp N/A is a more significant accomplishment then ~300 whp turbo on this car. but we all know companies like to give up when it comes to a real challenge because of the $$ involved. so good luck on your new endeavor.

Thats the same turbo I used.
I loved it.
Matt, do you remember tuning my celica? With the "ram horn" style manifold and the GT3071R?
We had the oil that got sucked into the turbo?
Just wondering.....because i had like 260whp and we didn't touch the lift or vvt either. Just seeing how comparable our kits are and what i could have expected.

Yes, I remember. We couldn't finish the tuning because of a couple of issues with the car. You really should bring it back, with a completed tune your car will drive great!

Update: with an RPS Max Street clutch, MWR flywheel, and 3" MWR exhaust the car is a real animal now. Spoolup comes on 700rpm earlier thanks to the exhaust. Unfortunately we've also found the limit of the turbo's internal wastegate. It works fine with the stock exhaust or even with an aftermarket catback but with the full 3" exhaust the efficiency is just too high and it boost creeps like crazy. The internal wastegate is shaped and sized well so there's very little room to improve it.
I have only been able to dyno it to 6200rpm where it is already making 280whp on the small cam. That's at a boost level slightly higher than we plan to run for the street though. After that point the boost increases wildly, making it unsafe for testing.
Next up: Tial 44mm wastegate and some more testing.

We're building them custom right now but will be looking to have a quantity manufactured toward spring. It's a serious mandrel bent system that goes all the way up to the downpipe.

We've been having the same problem with Smaay's car - once lift kicks in that friggin turbo is off like a rocket. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I won't even ride in his car anymore - its f*cking unsafe - the thing torque steers massively and breaks tires loose even in 4th gear. Its scary as hell for the passenger.

When I ran my car with an open downpipe, I would hit this crazy boost surge in lift. At the time, the tuning was so rough I didn't know if it was related to internal wastegate issues like you're seeing.

I had the 3076r and i loved it, great for highway driving (low to no boost) and when boost came, it came.
