topic pretty much says it all.
it happens when shifting the car in to reverse
and shiftin to second gear from the 1-2 shift.

could this be caused by moisture or lack of lubrication?

thanks for any help or suggestions you guys can offer.

The shifting cables need to be lubricated. I've had this problem twice now and this time they're gonna replace the cables.

The source (on my car) is the cables (as mentioned). Specifically, where the cables attach to the tranny they are held on with cotter pins. The cotter pins are right on top of metal washers. Metal on metal = squeak.

WD-40 fixes it every time. A little squirt is good for about 8 months.

hey autxr, were you able to access the cables through the center console?

DarthCelica,
did your cables go bad or anything since you mentioned that they were going to be replaced.?

i think they just needed to be lubed but since it was the second time i had the problem, they decided to just replace the cables.

You access the linkage (where it needs to be lubed) under the hood. Have someone wiggle the shifter while you look under the hood for movement. Lube the linkage at those points.

It is much easier to access with the airbox out, but a can of WD40 with a straw on it will work even in tight quarters.

my friends 5spd gt was dooing the same thing..... except it sounded like it was coming right from under the shifter boot... so we took it apart...... couldnt find anything wrong... put it back together and it somehow stoppped doing it... weird huh?

mine sounded like it was coming from under the shifter too but it wasn't. take autxr's advice. have someone shift back and forth while you check behind/underneath where the air box should be. spray everything that moves with wd40.

Cool... this is one of the things that really annoy me... this and the "water trickling" noise when you start the engine up. Need to fix that too

Use grease, it will last longer!!! Also shifted smoother.

Loudceli is right - use aerosol white lithium grease. It will last a lot longer than the WD-40 will.
