downshift to 2nd

car won't let me downshift to 2nd when rpm's are up. any ideas why?

worn synchronizers, worn clutch. The clutch would manifest itself in other gears as well.

it's only a problem from 3rd to 2nd above @4500rpm

If you have a 2002, the change in the shift gates makes it harder to get into 2nd. It takes a deliberate effort to get it there; so it's MUCH less likely to happen by accident.

Having driven with both shift gates, I do like the added security of the 02 gate, but it is much harder to shift quickley. Fortunately, I've given that up, after my misshift last month.
