my check engine light came on a few thousand miles ago and i've been driving with it on ever since. i haven't heard or noticed any problems so i've just been ignoring it. i've got about 42000 miles on it. i figure it's just a scheduled maintanence thing programmed in the computer. is there any way to turn it off using the odometer button or anyting else?

I would take it to your auto parts store and let them check the code so you at least know what it is, as for clearing it you can disconnect your battery for at least a minute it will reset your computer and ususally clear the code but if there is a problem it will come back shortly.

I'd get the code checked ASAP. Even though there are no symptoms, the reason for it could be causing irreversible damage to your engine. A CEL means something is defintely wrong with your engine/emissions system and needs to be fixed. You also won't pass inspection with it on.

The only way to turn it off is the reset the ECU

^he's right you can just disconnect the negative lead and then it will reset. Go to auto zone its free for them to check the ngine light and give you a read out so that way you know whats up with you car.

hey
I would really suggest getting it checked out, mine turned on after i got the car serviced and after 2 days of inspection toyota came to the conclusion that my engine is taking in to much oil and that I am going to have the whole bottom half of the engine rebuilt which really sucks!! and is gonna cost me an arm and a leg, so to speak. But im fighting with them cuz its only done 40 k miles so the engine should screw up already
anyways im gettin of track id definetly say get it checked out ASAP

My check engine light came on about 2 months ago and stayed on for like a week and then it all of a sudden went off on its own, then about 3 weeks later it came on again and then I got into an accident and when I got my car out of the shop (on the 13th of this month) my light wasn't on anymore and then today it came on again so I took it to Autozone where they checked it and told me I need to replace my Catalytic converter..sooooo yeah if your light comes on get it checked..I've been searchin for prices online but I can't find a catalytic converter for a 00' celica..any suggestions?

Try replacing the O2 sensors first. It's a lot cheaper. I went ahead and had the whole CAT replaced after driving around for probably 15k with it going on and off (it would only turn on if I was on the highway and would go away after about 7 starts). Otherwise, your dealership will charge you anywhere from $900-1600 to replace it. Mine was done for $900 when it came to bill time, but they originally quoted me at $1500.

Just do a search online for salvage yards with 00' engines for sale. They usually have other parts sitting around that they don't put online. Just give them a call and tell them what you are are looking for.

As additional information for whatever is worth, just recently after a hard downshift to pass another guy going uphill with my 01GT, I noticed that my CEL came on. Went to Autozone rented the meter to check the code. It returned a P0420 "Catalyst Efficiency below threshold (bank1)" code. My logic told me that the sudden high RPMs might have done something, remember that all new cars work of sensor readings and computer settings. Anyway, I cleared the code and the CEL has not come back again. I think that the moral of the story is that you should always do some research before giving up your hard earned money just because someone in Autozone tells you that you need a new part (that is what they are in business for).
