ok, the vvtl-i (lift) is controled by oil flow. at the vvtl-i controler there is a filter. correct me im wrong its like a second oil filter. has any one ever cleaned that filter?and if so how hard is it to get to and will i need a new filter and (or)a new gasket.
thanks

There used to be a "How To" written by 00silverGTS6spd (formerly know as Lucky_317) with good pics posted over on eC, but since eC is no more; I did a search on this site and turned up nada, a google search found this link to a vibe site but it looks like the pics where linked to eC
so no luck there either; you might try pm'ing 00silverGTS6spd and ask if he could post that how to here on nC.

"Symptoms: If you have problems of losing lift or Lift kicking on late (I.E.- 6500 rpms instead of 6200 rpms) and your lift bolts are NOT broken you'll want to check this filter.
Cause: Small particulates can get stuck inside the metal mesh filter which adds more resistance to the path of the oil. This means the oil take slonger to travel and results in lift coming on late or in severe cases not at all."

I checked out the link and the words all make sense but there are no pics. Is this something only the GT owners have to worry about? or the GT-S owners? or both?

gt-s = vvtl-i = lift.... im 99.9% sure that only gt-s owners have to worry about the vvtl-i controler filter because gt's dont have lift..

and yes the filter dose exist i beleve its just like a screen.

Yes, but if you go back and reread what you posted you seemed to keep flip flopping between the terms VVT-i and VVTL-i and there is a huge difference LOL. That is why people kept getting confused with your question. Later.

Lucky317 who cleaned the filter on that link says in his first post, "this is something that will affect the GT guys over time." then a couple sentences later he says "Symptoms: If you have problems of losing lift or Lift kicking on late (I.E.- 6500 rpms instead of 6200 rpms) and your lift bolts are NOT broken you'll want to check this filter."
Is he contradicting himself?

ragingfish who also posted on that forum says, "This affects the 2ZZ only. Not yours."
when asked "Is this a yamaha-2Z or Toy-1ZZ engine with this, or both?"

i wonder, if the filter being clogged can delay lift. if we can make it flow more by removing the filter or cutting holes in it, if lift will engage earlier.
INJENcelicaGTS

no, if you remove the filter, cut holes in it or any thing else will NOT make lift engage sooner. lift is controled by the ecu. the filter is there only (guessing??)to remove junk, so the junk dosnt clog the holes that the oil flows threw to engage lift. just guessing.. :eslap:

Your right. According to the service manual, they both get replaced. I've seen this write up too.
But what are the chances of it getting clogged? If you do regular oil service intervals, replace the filter everytime, and dont use dirty oil, what are the odds of it clogging? I think the oil line that feeds the lift acuator actually comes after the oil filter so clean filtered oil is getting fed through that screen.

The filters are there because the engagement and execution mechanics of vvti, and vvtli, of both the 1zzfe and 2zzge rely heavily on tight tolerances and optimum lubrication, even moderate levels of contaminates could spell big trouble for engine longevity.
Trust me, Japanese auto engineers are very frugal, if a component doesn

It does exist... pg EM 41 Svc. Man #2. If your going to do anything with it... I'd recommend replacing the gasket on the Oil Control Valve Housing. Not speaking from experience... I would suspect that some good old Kerosene should do a fine job on the filter if it is the mesh I'm thinking of. If your gonna get the gasket from Toyo... might as well price a replacement filter... it might be short $.
Pg EM 46 shows the removal, EM 63-64 the installation.
*NOTE: says that to remove/install the oil pressure sender you need a SST (not sure that you actually need to remove it unless it is blocking one of the control housing bolts).
Also, my impression is that this filter is for one of two reasons or both: to filter oil into the oil control valve and assist in preventing it from becoming contaminated &/or stuck... &/or to provide additional filtration to the oil that provides the hydraulics for lift engagement (that is what the valve is controlling). My guess is the 1st... to provide additional protection to the control valve. The service manual does call it the oil control valve filter.

No, it's more of a sfety measure than a must maintain thing

there two filters your talking about on a gt-s. one is for lift activation, the other is for vvt activation.
the one for lift is right in front of the head behind the breather tube.
the one for vvt is on the driver side of the head you'll need to remove the battery/ ecu box to get to it.
you have to remove the whole oil control valve and the filter is a little metal mesh filter. Its very fine, and everytime we've cleaned them theres always small particles stuck in them. brake clean works great for it.

damn, thats alot of hrs. but yeah i think i should clean them after 70k miles. i just think it would be smart even tho i change my oil every 3k miles with mobil1 and a k&n oil filter. but after 70 k miles theres bound to be junk in there. any thoughts? and no one has answered my question. is it hard to do. and will i need new parts? and how time consuming is it to do both??
