What is the difference between the Head, Long Block, and the Short Block, just wondering because my friend misshifted and is getting his Long Block and Clutch replaced.

Thanks

head: Cast part (usually aluminum these days) with intake parts, exhaust ports, valvetrain, cams (on overhead cam engines).

block: cast (aluminum or steel) part with the pistons, crank, rods, etc.

The head bolts to the top of the block.

short block: just the block with associated hardware (pistons, crank, etc).

Long block: full engine, including cylinder head.

Typically the long block will just require the manifolds (intake and exhaust) be bolted on. The short block needs the head, and often the oil pan bolted on.
