Engine Technical Question

What is the difference between the Head, Long Block, and the Short Block, just wondering because my friend misshifted and is getting his Long Block and Clutch replaced. Also, I know all missshifts are bad but, is this one of the worse things you can damage misshiftin or is the short block and/or tranny worse.

Long block is block and head, short block is just the block.
