look on EBay at the different manufacturers and specs. I would recommend one with a pager and microwave sensors in case you wanna leave your windows open
These guys seem to have pretty reasonable prices: http://www.asianwolf.com/caralarms.htm
I just ordered their Astra777 for my daughter's Celica.http://asianwolf.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=1068694|1068709&PRID=1392167
So, I'll be seeing how they are. Fast shipping notification... but hasn't arrived yet.
the Viper 791 also seems popular among members here

VIPER or any security made by DEI (i,e viper, hornet, avital, python etc)
Well, the Astra777 arrived. Quite intriguing. The antenna, LED, & valet switch are all in one unit. I have to figure out the radar (it did come with one) & glass break wiring... I definitely like the two way function;-) I may even have to replace the alarm on mine with one of these.
Good bang for the buck... I'd say. Got shock sensor module, glass break module, radar module, & siren, plus a leather case for the remote for $98.98 w/shipping. I'm gonna have to pick up some extra relays for ign kill & domelight activation... so anyone buying one of these might want to go for extra relays instead of the glass break module.
Now.... to spend a weekend putting it in the daughter's car.

those things are junk in my opinion. Better off spending a little more and getting something from DEI.
It's like a lock on your house door... it keeps an honest man honest. No matter the security system, if a thief really wants it... they'll find a way. Besides, reddog_deluxe's is an auto GT-S... who'd want to steal it any way? ;)
With some subtle differences, the basic criteria of an automotive alarm system requires very little intelligence. Many features can even be handled w/o a processor... such as door switches.
Some of the subtle differences comes down to material, build quality, range, features, etc. No argument that DEI products have an excellent reputation. However, for my daughter's application... there's no justification for a unit w/a cost of 2-4 times that of the Astra. Even if the thing completely dies... I can replace it & have spent less than the cost of a DEI for 2 of these things. The MSRP for a DEI unit w/similar features is probably around $200-$600. The bang for the $ from that Astra clearly shows. If you've got a high end show car & want a premium alarm for it.... by all means... go top end. You will get the same insurance discount from the Astra as you would the DEI.
*Note:Anyone have any prefrences for under $400???He won't get anywhere near the same amount of protection (microwave, glass, shock, 2-way) from a DEI, compared to the Astra @ that price.

A little more???? That Astra has glass, shock, microwave, 2-way paging, illuminated entry, can be adapted for remote start, an auto-start/auto activation feature, etc. Show me a comparable DEI unit that has the same or better features for $98.98 or less delivered....... even $150.....& I'll concede the point.
Junk? It ain't junk if it works. And tell me that the DEIs aren't made overseas, too.....
But, if he wants a DEI... that place sells them, too: http://www.asianwolf.com/valet554r.html starting @ $174.99 w/o one of a glass or microwave.

the viper 791 xv does all yours plus remote start with starter kill feature. The viper has a lifetime warranty.
It can be junk even though it works. Give it a little time and it will die.
the viper 791 xv does all yours plus remote start with starter kill feature. The viper has a lifetime warranty.Viper 791XV MSRP $599.99 (average sold for more like $189.00) & does NOT include a glass break sensor or a microwave sensor... only shock. The Astra does starter kill... just needs a relay... same w/remote start. The glass break & microwave increase the amount of prevention. The lifetime warranty is probably only if professionally installed.
It can be junk even though it works. Give it a little time and it will die. I can sort of agree w/the 1st, seen my share. Time will tell on the 2nd. But, I can still buy just the basic HU... and have paid less than the Viper (again... I have no problem w/their rep or quality, nor do I have any connection w/Asianwolf). Give anything electronic time & it will die. Been my job security for 20+yrs. I looked inside the Astra HU, the hardest thing in there... & there ain't much... is the PIC... & I'm sure the DEI has one, too.
S'up to reddog what he wants to do... figured I'd give him a good bang for the buck alternative. As I said... for my application... the price was hard to beat for that amount of protection & features.

Your right about the professionally installed part.
Microwave sensor is the same as DEI's proximity sensor right?
The other one is also an add on option too for DEI units, just not standard though.

True, nothing electrical lasts forever (gotta love lifetime warranties though).

Your right. I'm just giving my 2 cents. That isnt a bad price at all too.

The other one is also an add on option too for DEI units, just not standard though. Yes, on the proximity. Yes, they are all optional add-ons for the DEI.
True, nothing electrical lasts forever (gotta love lifetime warranties though). Haven't really read DEI's... but often times they are pro-rated... which sux. The other problem is the lifetime of some companies. I'm not familiar with how DEI is set up... but if Viper is a subsidiary co. and it goes out of business... kiss the warranty goodbye.

Thanks. By all means, you should add your 2 cents. That's part of what this community is all about. Yeah, I couldn't really complain for what I got w/it... now I just have to figure out wiring in all those optionals... & get it in the daughter's car;) I am curious to see how the range of the wireless alert is. Fortunately, there is a status confirmation mode on the remote & I'll be able to test out the radio's range. More out of curiousity.... with the exception of her work... she probably won't be that far from her car on a regular basis.

What year is the car. I can get you a complete vehicle wiring wireing diargram.
LOL... thanks bro.. it's not the car... which is an '00 GT... it's wiring the microwave & glass break in with the shock... they didn't provide pinouts for their add-ons... & I haven't heard back from their tech support. Not sure if I'm going to have to diode isolate things, the pre-alarm wire (if there is one... etc.).. so they get minus points in the support arena... but I'm not overly surprised @ that.
